20/1 available and I think he might well be Townends ride in it.
I was looking at James Du Berlais, but I found myself having more questions than answers regarding him.

I was keen on him in his novice chase season, but he failed to deliver, except on debut, when he was allowed to dominate.

Does he need to dominate? He's yet to knuckle down and battle, which would be a concern. He's travelled plenty well enough on more than one occasion and found little when asked.

I'm not entirely sure what trip suits him best.

Is he still too high in the weights on what he's achieved? Possibly so.

His two better runs, besides his debut, IMO, have been going right handed at Punchestown (although his run at Cheltenham in the Plate was promising), his debut chase win was also going right handed, at Fairyhouse, so I wonder if Punchestown is the end game for him this season? I'm not suggesting he absolutely needs to go right handed to win a race, but possibly a few lbs better off that way, on what I have seen, anyway.

After all that, I ended up backing In Excelsio Deo @ 15/1 for the Topham.

I backed Excelsio Deo at Cheltenham and he'd likely carry my cash again. He's a bit of a frustrating jumper though but if he gets into a rhythm he's on a good mark.

I didn't back him at Cheltenham, though he was well touted for the race, but I'd like to see a different jockey on, if I'm honest.

I don't really dislike Johnny Burke, but I think there are better around. No doubt the majority will be taken up, but if Crebilly doesn't turn up then Jonjo must be available for JP.

        • In Excelsis Deo has a big race in him but he'll be a nervy watch with his jumping.

I'm all in on JDB in it so you aren't changing my mind now

I think the race will suit him, I just don't know if he's an intended runner.

I also like James du Berlais, and I've backed him.

I'm waiting on the ground for Bill Baxter, but they've done a good job of getting his mark back down and he races off just 1lb higher than last season. At a big price I quite like The Edgar Wallace, but again I'm holding off until I have a better idea what the ground might be.

Spectre says there will definitely be one but it'll be a while off yet, as previously it will be a handicap and marks/targets still have a way to travel so watch his space....
