Join Ross Brierley, Paul Kealy, Tom Segal and Coral's Simon Clare as they look ahead to the 2023 Cheltenham Festival. Ross starts the show by catching up with Ged Mason who gives us an excellent insight into some of his key runners heading to Cheltenham in March.

          He's exceptional.
Miles better than the Racing Post.
          Needs a better gig really.

Ross was at one of the smaller preview evenings I went to last year and he was very good value, plenty of jokes and funny comments to go along with his hosting skills. Can't put my finger on it but he does seem to have quite an engaging tone of voice too, perfect for this kind of thing.

Heading to my local bar here in Cork city tonight. Hosted by Joe Seward, probably the best host around for these kind of nights Imo. Guests include the very funny and excellent Johnny Dineen of Upping the Ante fame, Brendan Powell and jockey Darragh O'Keeffe. Hope to have a report up tonight , depending on how much drink I have . If not definitely tomorrow

                      Cheltenham 2023 Preview Night

Venue : Quinlans Bar, Watercourse Road, Cork City

                      Host : Joe Seward

Guest : Johnny Dineen (Bookmaker) JD

Guest : Darragh O’Keeffe (Jockey) DOK

Guest : Brendan Powell (Assistant Trainer to Joseph O’Brien) BP

Cracking nights entertainment, here’s what the notebook said

                      Supreme Novices

JD : Warning signs there for Facile Vega at Xmas, looks like a horse with an issue. Fancies High Definition as it may boss the race

DOK : Don’t give up on Facile Vega, Willie Mullins says its the best novice he ever had

BP : High Definition was only doing half speed when it unseated at the DRF, if it gets loose on the front , won’t be pegged back. Marine National the biggest threat.

                      Gaelic Warrior definitely goes Ballymore

                      Arkle

BP : Only 4 or 5 in with a chance here, but likes Jonbon

DOK : Huge El Fabiola fan, what it has done this season is better than Jonbon, a year younger so will be improving

JD : Can't have Dysart Dynamo and can’t have Jonbon after Warwick run

                      Champion Hurdle

JD : Spoke to a cameraman who was at the last hurdle at Newcastle and said that Constitution Hill was the quickest jumper of a hurdle he’d ever seen and he’d include Istabraq in that! Says its a 2 horse race and the rest are a million.

DOK : Constitution the perfect horse, last years Supreme was awesome.

GB : Nico said the horse never breaks a sweat

                      Mares Hurdle

JD : Likes Maries Rock, each-way Queens Brook only. Honeysuckle regressing

DOK : Honeysuckle running up to her rating at the moment, she wins (Which brought a round of applause, the only one of the night )

GB : Sticking with Brandy Love, doesn’t fancy Honeysuckle

                      NH Chase

JD : Gaillard definitely runs and Patrick rides, but he’s not convinced and thinks there may be couple better than him in the race but didn’t specify

DOK : Likes Gaillard . Negative against Churchstone Warrior on account of its jumping. Likes Mahler Mission

BP Gaillard De Mesnil a good thing and fancies Mister Coffey each-way

                      Ballymore

JD : Tipped Inthepocket after saying that the English horses have no chance in any of the Novice hurdle races and throw in the Triumph as well

DOK : Negative for Gaelic Warrior but said that Good Land won the best Maiden hurdle of the season so far. Very positive

BP : Also very positive about Good Land

                      Champion Chase

JD : Huge negative about Edwardstone because of the way it is ridden. Fancies Energumene saying he was at another preview night recently and David Casey said Energumene would carry Blue Lord in this race

DOK : Said that Energumene was a strange horse. One day he looks great and the next day not so. Would like to see hime rode more prominently

BP : Said Energumene needs lots of give in the ground and that Editeur De Gite loves it around Cheltenham. Says Edwardstone has to be ridden stone cold as it gets keen once it starts passing horses.

                      Brown Advisory

DOK : Not too concerned about the ground for Gerri Colombe, its form is rock solid. Sir Gerhard the class horse in the race

JD : Gerri C best form is with dig in the ground. Cant have Sir Gerhard

BP : Thunder Rock likes to come from off the pace. Gives an each-way shout to Thyme Hill

Talks that The Real Whacker is going Gold Cup

                      Bumper

So all 3 fancy the John Kiely horse A Dream To Share in this ,huge praise for John Gleeson who will keep the ride even though JP has bought it. Especially if the ground is on the better side

It was then that Brendan Powell said that he heard that Oisin Murphy will ride one of Gordon Elliots in this!

                      Cross Country

Again all 3 tipped Delta Work. Only challenger would be Galvin but it makes too many mistakes. Everything else is wrong at the weights

                      Turners

Only 2 horses really considered in this

                      Soft ground : Mighty Potter

                      Good Ground : Banbridge

DOK did say that Might Potter could win an Arkle if it ran in it and was one of his Bankers.

                      JD Negative for Appreciate It

                      Stayers

DOK : Teahupoo is an improving horse, Blazing Khal impressed and is unexposed, likes Home By the Lees form through Honeysuckle

BP: Home By the Lee, couldn’t be happier with him , is in rude health

JD : Gave Home By the Lee as a Max Bet each-way as the ground (Teahupoo) and The bounce (Blazing Khal) would be concerns

                      Ryanair

                      All say Shiskin wins

DOK gave strong each-way shout for French Dynamite

                      Mares Novice Hurdle

BP : Will take a good one to beat Luccia

DOK : Huge fan of Magical Zoe and also likes Halka Du Tabert

JD : Lucia form not good. Some of these will be getting 5lbs. Mentioned Lot Of Joy and Nikini.

Then said Princess Zoe wouldn’t place if they were paying 18 places!!!!

                      Triumph

JD : On a preview night with David Casey said that he was very keen on Blood Destiny and could even see Paul Townend picking it!!

DOK : Thinks the lads in the yard are talking up Blood Destiny so they can get a better price on Lossiemouth

BP : Gave Comfort Zone a good chance.

                      Foxhunters

So the talk was that D Christie would only run one in this and that Winged Leader and Fern Lock were going elsewhere.

JD : Secret Investor had no chance and the English jockeys were like Corinthians compared to the Irish ones.

DOK : Negative for Billaway, would love to see Vaucelet win, mentioned the trainer not being well.

                      Mares Chase :

BP : Don’t rule out Ellimay and also likes Impervious

                      DOK : Jeremys Flame

JD : Sees it as a 2 horse race between Allegorie De Vassey and Impervious but takes ADV

                      Gold Cup

JD : Gallopin Des Champs not a good thing and would rather back Noble Yeats each-way

DOK : If A Plus Tard comes back it has a great chance but Gallopins form has been strong this season

BP : Noble Yeats has been targeted for the race

Then Brendan said something that made me sit up and take note. Remember all the fuss at the DRF that Paul Townend couldn’t pull Gallopin up after the Gold Cup. Brendan said that he was near the winners enclosure and it looked like Gallopin was absolutely out on its feet when it came back in , almost in distress. And that he had ‘leaned’ on Townends rein after the winning line to keep him up, rather than being difficult to pull up. Interesting observation!

                      Handicap Selections

                      JD : Coach Rambler (Ultima)

Said keep and eye on Charles Byrnes duo of Run For Oscar (Coral C) and Shoot First (Pertemps)

Also said he got a good tip for Imagine in the Martin Pipe

DOK : HMS Seahorse (Coral Cup)

BP : Andy Dufresne (Grand Annual ) , Common Practice EW (Boodles)

                      NAPS / LAYS / Charity €100 bet

                      JD :

NAP : Home By The Lee Each-Way

                      Lay : Honeysuckle

Charity Bet : €100 win El Fabiola

                      DOK :

                      NAP : Mighty Potter

                      Lay : Luccia

Charity Bet : €100w on Honeysuckle

                      BP :

                      NAP : Shishkin

                      Lay : Hermes Allen

Charity Bet €50 ew Andy Dufresne (Grand Annual)

                      Other stuff:

DOK : Best ride for the week : Sanibel Island Thursday 2:30 Clonmel

BP : Al Riffah (Not sure of spelling) Best (flat) horse in Josephs yard.

Not sure 'interesting' is the word. Very 'worrying' I'd say. Can't imagine he'd (Brendan) get it wrong or bullshit.
