I perhaps stupidly backed at 25/1 (albeit only with a free bet). Before doing any homework I assumed that older horses with previous quality might be able to hold their own against lower rated hunter specialists. But this thread would suggest otherwise & I will certainly listen given my lack of knowledge in this area (not a race I get involved with usually). Not expecting a return from that one…!

I think you're assumption is one that plenty share... I certainly did.
The line that would probably get reeled off to often is something like "back 'whenever' this horse was way better so if he runs to anything like that he'll thrash these ... For me, for a horse to end up Hunter Chasing, it means they can no longer get to that rating they previously obtained...
There will of course, at some point, be an anomily and make that look silly. The popular Secret Investor is this years most obvious candidate for that... but there are a few every year...
