2023 Mares Novice Hurdle

For the purpose of the 2022/2023 National Hunt Season HRI

"Novice" for hurdle races means a horse which has not won a hurdle race prior to 1st May 2022. However, any horse which wins a hurdle race for the first time from 1st February 2022 up to and including 30th April 2022 (other than a Grade 1 Weight For Age Hurdle) will be qualified as a Novice for the period up to and including the 4th December 2022.

"Novice" for steeplechase races means a horse which has not won a steeplechase prior to 1st May 2022 other than one hunters steeplechase in the previous two National Hunt seasons. However, any horse which wins a steeplechase for the first time (hunters steeplechase excluded) from 1st February 2022 up to and including 30th April 2022 (other than a Grade 1 Weight For Age Steeplechase) will be qualified as a Novice for the period up to and including the 4th December 2022.

Starting to look bad for Between Waters backers... felt sure she would run in the 2m4f race at Newbury but not entered. Wonder if she might stay a novice for next season now?

I should be more ruthless and cash out Between Waters. Entries over further than 2m but not taken them up. Will dwell on it and have a think but the signs are there I just probably need to be decisive.

I've followed entries and the timing of entries far more closely this season, and acted immediately if any expected entries haven't been made. And very much so for any horses residing at Closutton.

I wonder if the fact that Henderson has the MNH favourite in Luccia has influenced his thinking. Perhaps Henderson believe Between Waters is also a good one and has decided to keep her for next season?

Possibly, seen others elsewhere thinking she may start off in a low key bumper and that’ll be it till start of next next season like the route Luccia took.

Very disappointed if that is the case, she looked a big prospect in her P2P and you’d like to think a top chaser in time, long way off seeing that if she takes a bloody bumper route. Has to be a reason she hasn’t taken any entries and hopefully not just Nicky incompetence of late.

On that topic, I went to look at 10-12 or of Nicky Novice prospect I had marked before the season and where they are today.

3/4 of the way through it it wasnt worth the keyboard clicks to finish the analysis. Terrible all round, plenty non performers,pulling up/trailing off etc, non showers, those that did have a bumper run or strong P2P rating barely improved with some even regressing from debuts to 2nds run.

Attaca the only one that stood out and barely even at that certainly wouldn’t back him myself to win anything just yet.

I am of course negating his mares and still holding out on Jet Powered materialising into something but in summary Nickys novice geldings have been terrible.

Can never get my head around owners allowing trainers to do that, I couldn’t give two shits about other peoples horses I’d want to see mine out & running. Especially if it looks to be one as good as Between Waters.

If it had been a more high profile owner I’d say we’d have seen her out! Nicky is a minor injury away from having practically nowt to go to war with in the race.

He may just think Luccia is all he needs and Ahorsewithnoname as decent backup?
