Jockey Mullins said: "“He's much better on the track than he is at home, at home he isn't flash.
“Looking at the price he went off in his point-to-point, it was obviously a similar story there. He's much better on grass.
“That was very impressive. He was a bit keen all the way but he quickened up very well.
“That was as good as anything that has been seen this year.
“When you don't have one of Gordon's (Elliott) in there to maybe have a measure it's a bit easier.
“The bumper horses seem to be hitting top gear now, they were a bit hit and miss before Christmas.”
When asked if the Champion Bumper was tomorrow would he ride him he added:- “I don't know what I'm going to ride there.”
Have a feeling Paddy is still waiting for Chap to strut his stuff next time out..

Can absolutely see why he's favourite given the division this season, but is it even sure he will go to Cheltenham? Just feels like if Willie thought he was the best he had, we would have seen him before now...
Champagne Fever 26/12 Lost & 21/01
Briar Hill 03/01
Relegate 13/01
Then Ferny Hollow and Facile were seen prior to xmas. Not counting Sir g.
I've had this discussion before but if you think about it, it's probably very rare for the stable to know who's their best horse in any division, just by watching them at home.
Especially a stable like Mullins.
As Willie always says and mostly always demonstrates with his actions.
They have to do it on the track.
It's quite rare he sends a maiden to a graded race, as he wants them to earn their place.

Or are you assuming Paddy will choose something else?

Start of Jan and end of Jan are very different. Start of Jan gives you the chance to get a run under your belt and then head to the DRF, end of Jan doesn't.
I agree in principle with your last two paragraphs, but I do think Willie would know which ones are potentially his graded horses. If he thought that he was in that bracket, why not give him the chance to earn his place? I doubt he will have the chance to beat anything of note between now and Cheltenham.
Not trying to knock him, he looked really good. Just doesn't make a great deal of sense to me, unless he's just one for next year (which is backed up that Munir and Souede don't send many to the bumper, if any?)

They've said he doesn't work that well, Impaire et Passe was stated as not one who catches the eye at home and there will be countless others who save their best for the track.
Last year they obviously had Facile Vega and Redemption Day who Patrick was keen on and both performed well on the track.
Was it 2 years ago when Power of Pause was the talking horse and he was shite?

However, obviously sometimes they don't show what he wants to see on the track.
If they do, then these will follow similar paths to Facile Vega for example (but this is rare)
What can also happen is others that don't work as well get given their chance on the track later in the season and turn out to be better than their work at home.
I'd imagine he's given more horses a run out this year as he's not yet found an obvious Champion bumper candidate.
It wouldn't surprise me if It's for Me was on the save for next year list but he's given him a shot after seeing the PtP form looking decent, and his other bumper horses disappointing.

It's been commented on before, but the last three or four years are rarities as knowing which bumper horse is best is very difficult as they've mostly all come from 3m point to point fields.
And there's shit loads of those getting talked up these days.

I don't disagree with what you'd said, but I still think it's strange that he didn't give him his chance. I mean people on here were saying that he looked an exciting type, and fair play to those people but they aren't a better judge of a horse than Willie Mullins. Even I could see he was a useful sort!
Maybe he just got hit with a setback or something, I seem to remember he had a few entries around Christmas didn't he? I guess my worry (or I wish it was a worry if I'd backed him!) would be that this has always been the plan, and Cheltenham was never on the agenda. Best case scenario it seems to be is that he will go to Cheltenham with very little experience which isn't great either.
We will find out soon enough I suppose! I'm certainly not going to be backing him at 5/1.
