CDS … I can’t take anything from his form. He was very difficult to ride. Like staggeringly so. Maybe he is a difficult ride full stop in which case he won’t be very good. Maybe it was a one off. 7/1 is no price to find out, but on raw talent I’d have him right there. I thought he finished very quickly implying once the penny dropped (or rather he wasn't trying to pull right) he had pace.
I'm probably being overly critical of CDS. He's entitled to improve and is obviously well thought of at home but he just isn't for me. I wouldn't be sure he would beat Better Days Ahead again and he seems to know be Elliott's bumper horse by default due to the others all losing.

The bumper isn't a race I particularly care about but it would be good to have a ln even contest where we have several horses on the day there with a chance with a furlong to go. No standout horse and we the have better markets for the 2024 novice hurdles instead of Kilcruit/Sir Gerhard/Facile Vega being incredibly short 12 months before the next festival.

Ferny travelled like the best horse in his first bumper. He came wide (I don't know if Patrick wanted this or the horse just came wide) and Eric Bloodaxe stayed on the rail and steamed home. Ferny was slightly green approaching where the last hurdle was.

Fernys 2nd run was when he was extra keen and Patrick has had to go from the front. Again Ferny travelled like the best horse in the race. The others are at it turning for home. Forged in Fire comes up besides him and Patrick tries to give him a shove to move clear but doesn't. He gets a strike a furlong from home and is ridden from then and Forged in Fire outbattles him.

In his 3rd bumper Ferny has now learned how to settle properly and wins very easily. In the Champion Bumper, he's then settled near the back again and he produces the goods.

Looking at CDS, he did not travel like the best horse in his race and looked to lack that gear change for me. Watching Ferny you could see there was a smart horse in there. I didn't get the same feeling from CDS.
CDS was keen and hung, he done more wrong than Ferny Hollow did, IMO. Obviously taking this on trust that this is easily rectifiable.

Jamie Codd, whether to be believed or not, also said that Better Days Ahead is the best bumper horse in the Elliott yard, in his opinion. He had a run under his belt before CDS faced him too, so a little more experienced.

Time will tell now. I'm would imagine CDS will go left handed next, however, they could have sorted this issue and I guess they could give a right handed track a go again. Either way, I'm expecting big improvement from his debut run.

I agree, it's great to have an open contest which is why I am really enjoying the discussion and markets this year. There is value there if you can spot it, I am sure.

Further to ComplyOrDie points, Codd also said he wouldn't want to run into CDS again. Codd usually says it how it is I find. His opinion of course, but doesn't really play mind games.

If Mullins had an owner who was interested, would the owners expect one of Mullins lot (Paul, Patrick, Danny etc) to go and ride it out first and get their opinion?

            • I think Queens Gamble has been the most impressive bumper performer this season and if we get good enough ground at the festival I’d make her quite a strong bet. Hasn’t really been asked a question, won both starts at Cheltenham and gets the weight allowance. She might not be the most conventional winner or follow all the trends but she’s definitely my pick at the moment and at the prices. What are other people’s thoughts?

In what could be just an average year, she's my value. We can just get sucked into 'which of Willie's is going to win' a bit too much.

By getaway out of a hawk wing mare...I’m just surprised she isn’t as mad as a box of frogs....the trainer has has a real tough time of things lately so would be nice to see....and if the sire is ever going to do it the bumper must be favourite to be the race he does it in

I’d say that there’s a decent chance that is just people chasing their tales in this race and thinking “willie doesn’t have an obvious contender yet, this must be it”. That’s not to say that he won’t bolt up, but a lot of people are desperate to pile into something in this race.

He's probably the first Mullins "hype" horse I've not gone in on (after CDS and DIAYT). So he's going to bolt up
