  • 2023 Triumph Hurdle (Juveniles)

    Not seeing a single thread to highlight Juveniles & potential Triumph Hurdle contenders, perhaps useful to have discussion in one place. A few bits I’ve noted in recent days;

    - Gala Marceau has been trimmed for the TH (25-1 from 33-1 with 365).

    - Bestaline has been mentioned by JamieSensible. Trained by Elliott, ToniC says purchased by Tom Malone who also bought Quilixios. Bestaline is entered to make his debut tomorrow in the same race as Quilixios. 33-1 best price with Hills (36-1 with boost).

    - Gary Moore’s Bo Zenith put up by Mark Howard as his horse to follow. Successful on hurdles debut at Auteuil, apparently impressing new connections. 25-1 best price (PP/BFSB with cash-out).

The thing that stands out for me currently is the number of fillies towards the head of the market. From memory we’ve only had one (fortuitous) winner of the race, albeit from a much lower number of runners.

Are fillies set to start taking prominence in this race now or are we being drawn in because Willie happens to be training the fancied ones? It’s interesting the ones he has purchased have to go here or the MNH as they’ve all won over hurdles already. This means none can be held back for a novice campaign next season.

Certainly a different approach by Willie.

On a separate note. Bloodstock agents buy hundreds of horses every year so I’m not fussed that Tom Malone happened to also purchase Quilixios. He’s no doubt also purchased a bunch of juveniles that didn’t amount to much.

Does he hold back Hurdles Maiden horses, and Flat winners, and race the Hurdles winners, maybe.

And happens to have two Fillies that have already won over hurdles, this season, that cannot be Mares Novice Hurdlers or Novice Hurdlers at all next season.

So its now or never to have a Novice style season, albeit in the Juvenile sphere.

I would think that's what the owners may be hoping to happen - if they both stand up to the early training regime at Willie's.

I can remember Mysilv and Snowdrop winning for the fillies and an Irish one I can't recall. So probably 4 in the last 40 years, but as you say there seems to be more running now. Wasn't the Mares allowance less years ago though, 5lbs?

Fillies can go to the Boodles as well.

FWIW - Jazzy Matty will be having an easy few weeks and then the plan is to gear him up for a return to the track around Christmas, so he won't be one for the Juvenile race at Down Royal.

After that performance he doesn't deserve to be mentioned in a Triumph thread.... but a promising run next time and he'll be top of all our Boodles shortlists - I know this place too well

Sounds about right. I got halfway through darlojim post and the word 'boodles' popped into my head!

It’s certainly going to be interesting what Willie does. He seems to have way more juvenile recruits this season and more specifically, horses that have already won over hurdles. They are all in no-man’s land now and have to go for either the Triumph or the Boodles. They won’t necessarily all be good enough but his hand is forced. Usually Willie would have juveniles that were coming from the flat, AQPS bumpers or only placed over hurdles. This gives him flexibility to give them the year off if needed but it’s not the case with a bunch of these. It’s very un-Willie like and I’m interested how it will play out.

….I’m sure Scooby put him up for the Boodles many months ago. He was called Jamestown at that point. 25-1 Hills a/r (without boost).

….doesn’t appear to be much confidence in Bestaline for today.

Looked like the first time she'd ever seen a hurdle, certainly wont be troubling this thread again I don't think.
