  • Three Of The Best

As the appetite grows for the new season, myself and i'm sure we all are interested to know which horses we have all unearthed, found through P2P and sales pages and generally any horses you feel will fill up those ante post books this season.
    So anyone interested please post...
    1 Novice Hurdler
    1 Novice Chaser
1 Unearthed Gem (if you feel comfortable of course!)
Explanation if you want and no explanation too!

I like this thread so I'll have a go.

Novice Hurdler - Present Soldier: Beat Arctic Bresil in a P2P which looks like a good standard of race. Arctic Bresil himself was in with a great chance of winning another strong P2P when falling at the last. Sold to Gordon Elliott for 300k, I fully expect him to be more at home over a trip. Arctic Bresil sold to Henry de Bromhead for a decent fee (sure it was more than Present Soldier) and Master Chewy sold for a good whack too (he hasn't done much in two UK bumpers but over 2 miles is nowhere near the right trip).

Novice Hurdler: Haute Estime - posted this on the novice chasers thread and I'm prepared to stick my neck on the line seeing as though she runs in the 2.10 Perth tomorrow. I'm not saying she will be the best (contrary to what the thread asks) but I do think she's going to be much better than people realise. Now rated 132 over hurdles she managed to finish a very creditable third in the same Aintree race that stablemate Ahoy Senor won the year before. Lucinda Russell has said she "suspects she is quite good" and confirmed to me a couple of months back that she's going chasing (now confirmed with tomorrows declaration). If she can emulate Ahoy Senor then she will be worth following over the season.

Unearthed gem: Back to the P2P theme with Arctic Bresil there's a horse now with Willie Mullins by the name of Nick Rockett (won the p2p Arctic Bresil fell in). Now I see a lot of people talk up the likes of An Tobar, Barry the Butcher, Better Days Ahead etc but nobody mentions Nick Rockett. I am told that connections think he could be a graded horse although I don't know the plans with regards to this season. Assuming Chapeau de Soleil is his bumper horse then hopefully NR can have a campaign novice hurdling. Not sure of the twar price now but I backed this a while back at double figures. I'm sure you can still get 12s+.

Novice Hurdler: Imagine (see link below)
Since I originally posted he has now changed ownership and is in the Caldwell colours.

      Novice Chaser: Saint Felicien
At the current prices I’m not really enthused by the novice chase markets and I’m not sure I’ll be that active given my approach. Saint Felicien came with a big reputation and didn’t quite deliver over hurdles but that was partly down to being stuck in no-man’s land as he was only a novice for part of the season. I say this every year but Saint Des Saints progeny love their jumping and chasing should be where he makes his mark this season, probably at the intermediate trip.

Unearthed Gem(s): Irish Point and Inneston (see link below)
I’ve included both due to the form line. Although Inneston was the Victor when they met, he’s gone to Gary Moore whereas Irish Point to Big Gordon. So that levels things up.

One place for those who are crazy enough to already be looking ahead, to discuss early fancies.... before the 2023 diaries kick off. No after timing prices you've already taken in here if they're not available anymore. If you are desperate to after time a price, make a diary in the members section and do it there

Discussed briefly this with a few and in response to targets recently on here, the sire stats for chasing are mental for horse to runners 56/78 72% . Loads improve for the switch as you've touched on and given how highly regarded he came as & how he faired on his 2nd start 6/7lbs improvement this year and he's bang in the mix potentially. Far too quick some have written him off on that Coral Cup run. Very eager to see him.

The majority of Gordon’s ran like muck at the Festival and coupled with the fact it was the Coral Cup on only his fourth start, I’m willing to overlook it.

Will add a little write up for them in due course, but my personal ones are….

Novice Hurdler - I'm sure plenty will nominate An Tobar for obvious reason and I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do, BUT I'll pick another horse - Issuing Authority. He won his bumper at Uttoxeter (beating some well regarded horses including Master Chewy) over an inadequate trip and has reportedly summered really well, putting on plenty of condition and muscle. I also own a share in the horse so I've got to back my investment!

Novice Chaser - Fil Dor. Confirmed by Gordon he will be going chasing. I thought he ran with great credit last year being beaten in his last 3 races by a potentially very good horse with plenty of speed. If Gordon steps him up to 2m 4f I think he will excel over fences.

Dark Horse - Salt Rock. A 4 Y-O gelding sold to Kim Bailey at the Cheltenham Festival Sale for ?205k after winning his P2P at Charlton Horethorne. He looks like he will make up into a fine chaser in time but I'll take a chance and gamble that he will start off over hurdles and win some decent races in his novice season.
If anyone is vaguely interested, there's a link to his P2P here:

Looking forward to seeing other people's nominations .

                    Novice Hurdler - Hiddenvalley Lake

Novice Chaser - Goshen - No confirmation he is going chasing yet, but I'm hoping he does.

Dark Horse - Between Waters - Already been mentioned on the forum but she's one I'm really looking forward to seeing. Really liked her p2p performance. Mares Novice Hurdle an obvious target for her, whether that be this coming season or next, as she'll only be 5 next season.

Novice Hurdler - Kudasheva top lot at Cheltenham sales (320K to HDB) out of Pour Moi / Daboya. Dam half sister to Don Cossack. Won her only P2P quite impressively making all the running and finishing without been asked for too munch. Looking at form not a lot to go on as 1,2,3 haven't raced since but 4th won next time out. Have her in my MNH targets, given the year that's in it would be fantastic to see Henry rewarded with some success on this prospect.

Novice Chaser - Don't have a strong opinion here on anything that hasn't been discussed already.

Unearthed Gem - Mister Policeman 120k purchase for Mullins in March, finished 4th to Ivaldi (joined Paul Nicholls) on first start. Won next time out. Looks to have been given a very easy ride in both races not asked for any effort till the last run (showed some true colours). Particularly in his 4th place finish the ground he recovered was impressive as was his closing finish of the 2nd race that he won. Posted the fasted sectional time of that day in Fontainebleau. Is he a future G1 superstar? Time will tell but as he's won already over hurdles, we might see him be one of Mullins targets for something like the county (emulate stateman)
