Patrick in the RP tonight:
"Gaillard Du Mesnil seemed to confirm that he is just short of Grade 1 class and that he needs further. Is there a race at Cheltenham that isn’t a Grade 1 and over further? I was disappointed to see him beaten, really I was. Very disappointed indeed. Oh well."

He's probably not ready to run.

Jonbon, you can see totally loves attacking those fences, which I think is massive for a 2 mile Novice Chaser.

Problem with going off from the front is a certain Dysart Dynamo. If he lights him up like the Supreme last year, he may run the finish out of him, which falls right into El Fabs hands.
What I’m hoping for is with Jonbon strengthening up etc etc as they do year on year is he’ll maybe have a bit extra to keep going at the finish, provided they don’t go a stupid gallop and he sits just off DD.

The thing about 'good jumpers' is that all horses make a jumping mistake eventually and 'moderate jumpers' have more opportunity to learn to recover their mistakes whereas it can be curtains for a 'good jumper'. Think Un De Sceaux.
Different horses do it in different ways. The main aim is to negotiate the fence safely without losing momentum and that's what El Fabiolo has done in both his chases. It's most unlikely that Jonbon will gain a length at every fence although it's certainly feasible that it will happen at a few.

I should say I’m not including the obviously woeful jumpers

Has he got ANY form in the book that'd make him a G1 festival winner?
