That's the narrative we're led to believe, but none of us are flies on the wall.

I still don't think Paul has the say so that Ruby did, so on this basis I wouldn't take this as a given, despite what some think.

Do you not think the Blue Lord example is quite a good indication in Townend seeming to get the choice? Like there's every chance they're both running in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham where Townend could well be on Energumene. So it would make even more sense for the owners to stick Jacob on Blue Lord Sunday, if they were calling the shots.

DJ rides almost all M&S horses. PT is on Blue Lord because Mark Walsh rides for JP. PT has never ridden GDM.

This is confusing? I'm talking about Jacob not Mark Walsh? Jacob is on Sceau Royal, who is in the same ownership as Blue Lord.

FYI Paul Townend has first pick on all Willie Mullins trainer horses owned by M&S. This was stated by Daryl Jacob on the Road to Cheltenham a few weeks back

            • We need GDM to get beat for him to go NHC. I keep saying it but Kilcruit may well surprise here. Will have to cover him for BANC before Sunday .

No. I don't think it's about future races and what he'll ride then. It's about now, and Paul will always get a ride if Willie has one in the race, with the exception of JP's horses, IMO. Mark Walsh is based in Ireland so can ride all of the JP horses, all of the time, not like Daryl, who is based in the UK.

Paul will ride other owners horses when he has nothing else entered in a race, but where there are multiple options I think the retained riders come in.

This is my best guess at how it plays out, others will have other opinions. It's hard enough playing Mullins bingo with the horses, let alone the jockeys though

Townend gets it wrong a fair amount of time IMO.
Lossiemouth first ride, Minella Cocooner last years DRF, The Nice Guy last years fez etc etc.. I would never use stable jockey picked X so it's the best as solid reasoning to back a horse.

                  • Paul was always likely to pick gdm

                    2nd in the drinmore
                    Won a grade 1
May well be his ride in the BANC

Stable jockeys would rarely step off a grade 1 winner to ride a horse that has only won a beginners chase even if that horse is very talented

Especially when the owners of that horse have a retained rider to use

daryl also rode JDB on that chase start and will likely be riding him at Cheltenham

It was me who suggested it, based on the idea that the ground might not be soft enough for him. This is the exact quote from a Racing Post article. I'd still maintain if the ground quickens up, he'd be one of the first non-runners based on the quote. Sorry if you feel 'put away' by the post, it wasn't meant in that manner.

"James Du Berlais was a Grade 1 horse in France as a youngster and has always been highly thought of and put in an exciting performance on chase debut. He would prefer it if it was softer ground so a decision on his participation will be made later in the week."

                        • There’s one or two where Willie mentions ground concerns for the weekend
All declared but hopefully they’ve watered enough

Nope not at all, and no need to apologise. That clears that up for me. Thank you.

GDM backers for the NHC basically need GDM to be withdrawn or run like shit. Willie persisting down the Grade 1 route having seemingly decided he's a Grade 1 horse is in itself, a NHC red flag. If he were to win (I don't think he will) then the NHC would surely be out. If he were to lose marginally into 2nd or 3rd by a few lengths, then I still think Willie will be eying up the BANC not NHC. Such a great race.

Who else does Mullins realistically have for the NH Chase ?
He has several possible darts for the BANC surely...
