Was this in that podcast at the start of the season or a more recent update?

Well he’s the one who namechecked it as a possible target so maybe.

He still got the entry though, and gentlemansgame didnt, so it must still be on the table.

He’d have been running today if it was the number 1 target. Get him qualified then put him away & freshen him up for it. Waiting until the Ten Up would be a fairly risky plan.

I recall reading once upon a time, that the opposite is true to this kind of scenario. Horses who are fast finishers need a shorter trip, and horse who win but look like getting caught need a longer trip. So on that thinking, id say Ramillies would have won by an even greater distance had there been another furlong.

True or not I cant confirm, but its another angle

            • Hills pushed Chemical Energy out to 12s(NRNB), obvs folk will be split a bit after(understandably) that but that's about what he was a couple of days after winning at Chelt I think and you feel he'll only run him on decent ground anyway and you'd expect much better than that today.

Cheers pal. Delighted with that. Ram will stay all day, he just doesn't have any speed. The good news about todays result is it makes the 650/1 double live and it makes GDM going BANC not far more likely, but just a bit likely.

I'd say there's now only 2 things that could stop GDM lining up in the BANC

Willie wanting to run him in the race he has the best chance in

And JDB running a big race in the flogas and looking like 3 mile won't be an issue

Looks like they've already for a dual Cheltenham festival winner lined up for the BANC so I don't see JDB impacting on where GDM goes.

I hope its the NHC for GDM but I'm far from convinced that it will be.

Actually yeah I get that - if you look at finishing speeds, you’d normally associate those with a low FS as being those more suited to a staying effort. I think Racing TV said they going quite a gentle pace early on

                      • My feelings are that GDM will be well beaten in the flogas. Willie will send him to the NHC. He’s not fast or classy enough for the BANC. Ramillies is even slower and less classy. I think that the one to take out of today’s race is chemical energy. Big and tubby and ran out of puff. In my opinion hills 12/1 nrnb is tempting.
equally gentlemansgame will probably get stuffed next weekend, so GC path to the BANC will be clear.
                        probably……
I also had a dream that shishkin went off favourite for the champion chase after winning the game spirit and being supplemented

                        • Im really surprised with the lack of excitement for Thedevilscoachman after that performance. I thought he jumped, and travelled better than anything in the race. He looks by far the classiest horse. When the squeezed him out the 1st time he stuck his neck out and battled. I can see him cantering all over them in the BA. Now I know the trainer has said he needs proper soft ground, but he may well get softer side of good on Wednesday. Looking at what JP has here surely he has to run. My biggest worry is the trainer. Meade quoting they might think of a handicap????????? fuck sake Meade, with that rating which one would that be..................

I agree, the comments were bizarre.
He needs proper soft ground so not sure about the BANC, and I didn't enter for the NH chase cos he needs no more than 3 miles.
But if it came up good we might go for a handicap ?
                            Bellend.

                            actual quotes.........

“I'll have to talk to JP and Frank (Berry, McManus' racing manager) before I can say where he's going to go next because I don't know. Frank is away on holidays with the boss. I do think wherever he goes, he does need soft ground, that's essential.

I think that Cheltenham mightn't be soft enough for him, if it was good ground there. We might even be thinking more of a handicap there, that might be an idea.

“I didn't put him in the National Hunt Chase, I put him in the Brown Advisory instead as I think three miles is far enough for him.

Assuming this is accurate journalism it's fucking nonsense.

                            • I'd have to agree. Thedevilscoachman was impressive to me (not pocket talking) whereas both Ramilies and GDM look plodders and should both go to the NHC. I'm getting more confident that Mullins has enough darts elsewhere for the Arkle/Turners and BANC, with the final mix still to be decided. What a conundrum Willie has. If he gets it right, he could possibly scoop all 4 novice chase races. At worst, probably bagging 2 of these?
