  • On GDM Mullins said: "He ran great on his first run back for the season and we can look forward to plenty of improvement from him. The rain came at the right time."

Asked if he would be training him for the Grand National, Mullins replied: "No, we'll be going the Grade 1 route."

Yes it is and also worth over 20K less than the BANC

Interesting. I wander if he was being literal when he refers to Grade 1s. Might be time to start thinking about those NHC dockets.

                  Very possible

Be interesting to see what happens

Patrick will no doubt be whispering in Willie's ear for the next 3 months trying to get him to the NHC

He wins a grade 1 that probably wont happen, he gets beaten again itd have to be pretty likely

Yeah exactly, I wonder if Classic Getaway and Cocooner go in the Nevilles, will give them an idea on who is leading their pack at 3m.

                    • It's an interesting one with GDM. He ran in 2 grade 1s last year and never looked like winning either of them. Today was as close as he's got and I can see him going close at Christmas whilst he has the jumping experience over his rivals. As for March, that advantage will have significantly reduced and it'd have to be a very poor BANC for him to be going close imo. NHC all the way for me

A poor BANC based on his run today over an insufficient trip............ummmmmm

                        • This may be a bit of pocket talk because I am balls deep on GDM for the NH Chase. However, working on the basis that Patrick will definitely be given a ride with a proper, proper chance in the NH chase, Willie doesn't currently house a particularly obvious alternative. I believe the three horses most likely to take high rank over 3m trips in Willie's stable are Minella Cocooner, Classic Getaway and either James Du Berlais or Appreciate It. However, I strongly suspect at least one of JDB/Appreciate It will stick to shorter trips. The result is that one of GDM, Minella Cocooner or Classic Getaway will be the NH Chase horse. Personally, I cannot see MC or CG relishing the extra distance and by process of elimination, GDM remains comfortably the most likely.

If however, Willie isn't too fussed about giving Patrick a good ride, I could be in all sorts of trouble!

                          • I don’t think that you can take willies comments too literally. I expect he just means graded route rather than handicapping. I can’t believe that Willie doesn’t have one or two with better chances for the BANC come March

I'm not convinced how strong a stayer GDM really is.
He looks like a one pace merchant to me.
A decent one pace I admit, but not a classy traveller type.
I think I'd be more inclined to back what I percieve as classier to beat him.
Won't always work out mind you.

Apologies Lobos, I wasn't very clear. I'm basing it on his runs in graded races last year. I believe that his jumping experience from last year had a big impact on what he was able to do today (especially considering some of the jumping efforts of the others, I think that's fair)
