Chemical Energy could also be put away until the Festival after his victory in the Jim Wilson Memorial Novices’ Chase saw him slashed to 12-1 from 50s by Paddy Power for the National Hunt Chase.

Trainer Gordon Elliott, who was completing a double along with jockey Davy Russell, said: “He has done it well. Davy said he pulled him wide for a bit of better because he hated the ground on the inside. He just needs good ground.

“The National Hunt Chase is the type of race he will be going for. He probably won’t have run now until then. He wants better ground, you couldn’t knock his performance, but he is ground-dependent.”

    • A 61-length success for Chemical Energy was deemed enough to secure his spot in the National Hunt Chase at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival and his trainer Gordon Elliott was particularly happy given he has a 66-1 ante-post wager.

The six-year-old is now no bigger than 16-1 for his March target following an easy win over his two rivals in the 3m?f novice chase.

Elliott plans to give him a five-month break and that route has been successful in the past as Galvin was given the same preparation before winning the Grade 2 novice chase in 2021. His trainer is clearly hopeful of repeating history.

"We're on at 66s!" the trainer responded to news of a price cut. "He wants better ground and Davy [Russell] said the further he went the more he warmed up. You couldn't knock him.

"That's [National Hunt Chase] the type of race he'll go for – the further he goes, the better he'll be. He won't have a run until then. We'll mind him and freshen him up.

"Davy said he pulled him out wide for a bit of better ground; he hated it down the inside where it was more tacky. He's a Cheltenham winner now who's won a few races and that was a good performance."

      Big Gordy on at 66s!

      • He's a must bet now after that quote.

        • He was good today but it has to be a huge negative if he doesn't run again until the festival. He's only run twice over fences to date so he'll surely need more experience before March.

12/1 seems an over reaction to me.

          • One of those things that makes me feel a bit daft considering this is one of his key planning races for the Festival. In my head I just dismissed Chemical Energy because he wasn't Ash Tree Meadow, who I'd hoped would be 'the one' and didn't consider backing CE for the NHC. Kicking myself a bit.

            • The 3m1 hcap looks an easy race to rate around with the ever consistent Cptn Cat 3rd regularly running to around 130, The wolf has tie ins with him and on better terms ran to around high 130s with the winner posting a carer best high 130s, why am I waffling on about the hcap. Well the Novice event was a little three runner affair running the last circuit in a good 25L quicker prior to the last in which time Chemical Energy sauntered home in a trot(still only 5l slower at the last). I'm not taking it too literal as the hcap wasn't the quickest thing ever set but at this stage even accounting for the race falling apart you'd be hard pressed not to award him at least 145+ based on what he did today as he would of easily won the hcap off of 137.

Be interesting to see what the hcapper views it as, if 145< irrelevant of what Gordy has said Kim Muir would be a tempter.

                A big one.

But Gordon's picked him for the race, so maybe we shouldn't be surprised.

There will be plenty more like that along the way . No need to kick yourself. You'll bet others at the absolute right time and will feel great. I too left him alone as I couldn't envisage him as a Stayer based on his back form. You need to trust your own judgement sometimes and if it is wrong just take it on the chin and move on. We can't and won't ever get everything right.

                  • Can we see Gorden sending Chemical Energy and Frontal Assault to the NHC?

                    • ….with Chemical Energy a best price 12-1 for NHC & 10-1 in a number of places, the best play for those wanting him onboard at those prices could be the 11-1 TWAR with Hills boost.

I could yes. Different owners and neither will be good enough for the shorter races. He has access to good amateurs so being double handed should not result in a poor jock.

That was his third run over fences, he had one over 2m6f at the back end of last season.

I've requested them to price for the NHC so fingers crossed they offer a few more points.

Thank's C.o.D. , I really didn't think that Elliott would big up C.E if he knew he wasn't qualified...
