Don't blame him at all. It's him or Ramillies. Who would you want to ride ?

      • Would Willie rather win the NHC or the BANC with GDM ? With both Minella Cocooner and Classic Getaway out of the equation, I don't see anything better than GDM re Willies Staying chasers unless of course JDB can improve and step up in distance. Would he leave himself with a Ramillies or Kilcruit perhaps and just realistically hope for places in the BANC or do we think he would want a horse in the race with a proper winning chance like GDM but sacrifice a big chance of winning a lesser race ? Proper conundrum.

Patrick Mullins on GAILLARD DU MESNIL:

"He was beaten in a G1 novice and he got beat in the Brown Advisory last year, he's maybe shown he's not quite that level.

"I'll be hoping that Willie will see the light and send him towards the National Hunt Chase!"

Was Stattler not considered a superior horse to both Gaillard and Capodanno pre fez last year? I'd say he would have been personally :/.

GDM and Capodanno were both beaten before March convincingly whereas Stattler was unbeaten in his chase campaign.

Good point. I guess though the BANC was looking very strong last season. Take on L'Homme Presse, Ahoy Senor and Bravemansgame or Run Wild Fred. This season it's Thyme Hill, The Real Whacker and Gerri Colombe (who might not go there).

Good point. Chemical Energy will imo be a formidable opponent the way he won around the course. The Real Whacker.......fav for the BANC.......sad.

                • Appreciate It pushed out for the Arkle again by PP. Shortening for the longer race at the DRF. Looks like that's currently the plan and if he wins in Ireland, you'd have to say he will be Turners bound. Im starting to think the BANC is more likely than the Arkle for him!

Be no problem for him and I love to see him run the trip

                      2024 gold cup bid

His past may be 2m.. but I don’t think his future is

He would have to be supplemented then which you can't see happening with how Willie does his spread entries at the first entry stage. Therefore it would most likely be the Turners.

I really don't know how Sir Gerhard is going to fit into this atm. Is he going to be saved for Aintree and Punchestown? Surely the most likely novice chase he will go for is the Turners and I can't see him and Appreciate It running in the same race

                        • Sir G could be the surprise Willie BANC package. He is entered.

                          • Sit G most likely for arkle IMO

You wouldn't think so with him only starting off at 2m. I would say it's very rare and maybe not even seen before that a horse starts off at 2m and then goes into a G1 at Cheltenham over 3m when he's never raced over that distance before other than a PTP. It would completely throw up a new occurrence never seen before. Horse's would normally start at 2.5 if they are to race over 3m in a G1 later that season. And to jump from 2m to 3m G1 in one step would have never been heard

What makes you think this Q?

Willie has never sent a winner of the Ballymore to the Arkle and the only winner he's had that has gone back down in trip at the festival is Faugheen. He was a freak, and Sir Gerhard is definitely not in the same mould as him, IMO.

His performance in the Ballymore looked more one of a stayer than anything else, too, to my eye. I would say Turners or further and the Arkle would be the last of the Novice Chase races he'd end up in (NH Chase excluded).
