As with all the other free bets and free bet profits since Punchestown, my winnings from 4 correct scores with b365 went on to GDC for the Gold Cup. I have little worry about his target or the opposition and my only concern would be whether or not he stays sound. He's a big unit and that's not always an advantage.

Happy to leave GDC alone at the current price

With the likes of Ahoy Senor, there’s going to be some pace in this renewal, won’t be like last year if they turn up. Can a horse like GDC stay like that?

is he a vautour or a Kauto Star???? I’ve seen plenty of speedy 3 milers not stay in a GC… not so many K-Stars in my time

Isn’t it about time we had a bog on the Friday, last one was the Native River v Might Bite duel

Hope he doesn't put paid to Delta Work chances in the XCC this season but wouldn't put it past them. I have mentioned this before.

Start Off the season sounds like a chance that the X-C is possible this season - if he were to fall short at Down Royal and at Christmas.

If Galopin des Champs, A Plus Tard, or any horse, whacks him 20L in the Savills at Christmas, and his handicap mark went down a little then I could see the option to go X-C would loom much larger.

Also if Farouk D'Alene emerged as a stablemate capable of making the Gold Cup with a decent chance, that adds to the mix.

The Grand National would also be of interest if Galvin dropped 6lb back to 160

Agree. Personally think they'll make him into a GN contender this season so fully expect him to run 'below expectations ' for a few races to come.

He's not going to win the Gold Cup.

He's had three seasons chasing already, I cannot recall the last Gold Cup winner who won it for the first time in their 4th season chasing.

So I wouldnt be surprised if his main target was another race.

RP has Gordon quoted as saying that Galvin's Gold Cup will be the champion chase at Down Royal so he could be this season's Frodon

I wonder how many defeats in the big chases he needs this season before running in the Cross Country in March...

I can't take the 33s for anything significant which hopefully is a blessing in disguise.

If we have a good festival again, I say me and you try and buy Galvin outright

                        A Plus Tard.

Novice season won the novice handicap at Cheltenham. 2nd season 3rd in the Ryanair. 3rd season 2nd in the Gold Cup. 4th season won the Gold Cup.

We do however know APT is a better horse and this years Gold Cup at this stage looks top drawer.

Before APT, I think you'd be looking at Cool Dawn, Master Oats, The Fellow and Dessie (so a long time ago).

I'm just putting together a few small multiples and was about to use Allaho as one of my banking multipliers, and then it dawned to me that GDC could turn up in the Ryan Air instead considering WPM has atleast 4 other strong Stayers who could for the gold Cup (Stattler, Capadano, Monkfish and potentially Allaho after his 3m win last season).

Has WPM been quoted anywhere saying this will be GDCs target this season?
I was also putting together multiples tonight and just questioned if GDC would be aimed at the Gold Cup or not but have made a call that he will. I have it between him and APT and think these 2 are quite clear of everything else. My main outsider is Protektorat as think he has more improvement in him after running well last year.

The comments from Willie last year are below.

I reckon Galopin Des Champs is a Gold Cup horse. I have to discuss that with Greg and Audrey (Turley, owners) but he looks a horse for the Gold Cup. He had a hard race at Cheltenham. Any horse that goes at that pace would have a hard race. All his homework suggested he was fine and Paul was happy with him. I was going to wait and go over three miles at Punchestown but then I thought about a Grade 1 race over two and a half miles here and we took our chance today. Paul rode him differently down to the first than he did at Cheltenham and that made a big change. To me it looked an ordinary pace and it looked like the other two elected to challenge him over the last three fences. Once he changed gear between the last two it was over bar jumping the last. He just seemed to be on a wrong stride and Paul let the horse decide. He put down lovely and got over it. He quickened away after the last and he couldn't pull him up going around the bend - Willie Mullins, trainer.

                            Only 7 months ago then

APT has been younger than the average runner tackling some of those races.

And of course if GDC comes up and trots up in prep races, along with how impressive A Plus Tard was in March, I wonder how many others will shuffle off to other targets. Let's not forget that Galvin's owner also has Stattler who is a reasonably live contender, and Willie has been known to be double handed in past Gold Cups.

Whatever happens in the end, I've got to say that this is potentially looking like the best Gold Cup for a good while.
