  • Fair replies guys and it sets it up as a really interesting race after yday instead of something that could of potentially been a one sided affair if anything had come out and won it pretty well. I still stand by what I said mind, if he's not got his head in front from the last I can agree with he's had to make up too much ground etc but he has gone in front, traded 1.01(tad surprising that) and not gone away.

Energumene is harder to weigh up, obvs he's been eased after the mistake at the last but didn't appear to be finding much.

    • Energumene was a bit hot and cold yesterday
Over jumped and few down the back and looked like he was tanking, and then as they came up the hill to jump the remainder... didnt look like he had much left

Now you can get a price on Energumene, especially if he comes up soft on that Wednesday. EdG wants good ground to be able to do what he didnt yesterday, so you'll be back to picking between Energumene and Eddie

I don't think it was covered until the night before.

I'm not sure the ground argument will help anyone, as it's always going to be slightly different on any given day. If you want to forgive a horses performance or disregard one and want to use the ground as a potential reason then that's fine, but it's guessing IMO. (but so is a lot of this game)

But in essence you're right, in that the ground will be different come March, and so will the horses involved in terms of form and fitness.
I think that might be one of the reasons the favourites don't always win
        It's a fucking guessing game

Bring back lock down and the virtual National I say, much more scientific.

        • I dont think the results suggested tacky ground

Il Ridito - i have him down as a a horse that goes better on goo ground
          Stage Star, the same
          EdG...

Nothing, other than Eddie and Gold Tweet, came from the back of the back to win. For me, that would suggest the ground was fairly quick. Would be useful to compare standard times to verify this.

You clearly backed potters corner for the virtual national too

I thought Townend was poor on him, he was jumping quickly and into the backs of the front two so was being pushed into a fence then pulled immediately after, couldn't get into his usual rhythm, I was surprised he didn't take the horse wider earlier...

Add Might I to that list - out the back and beaten a neck in second.

                  • Do we think yesterday's result would have been any different on the other course?

If they run like yday no. Even harder to reel in rivals with two to jump off that tighter swing in on the Old Course.

I think the opposite. The front runner bias on the new course is much greater than the old course, whether that's because horses are able to make up ground at different points and so won't run like yesterday I dunno but on the old course I'd be fairly confident the form is reversed (doesn't change the fact it was a massive performance from edg yesterday though)

Not disputing what biases are on either but if you replicate that yday on the other course he’s prob got a slightly bigger lead at 2 out. Fascinating on the day this now tbf.

                          • The Mullins camp seem an awful lot happier after the race this year than they were last year. 5/2 looks pretty good if he's sound midweek.

Why would they be happier after yesterday Archie? That must be his worst chasing performance surely?

                              • Willie thought the new white trim on the Cheltenham fences was the reason for Energumenes poorer jumping display as it was the first time he's seen them. The experience though would help him in respect of March. He's a bit stiff and sore but hopefully he'll be ok in a few days time. Paul reckons he'll beat the front two when they meet again.
