  • The only horse to get within 8 lengths of him over fences is shiskin in 9 runs and that seems to have broken shiskin

I'd be a little surprised if he didn't batter edwardstone tbh

Don't think he gets the credit he deserves myself

But edwardstone does have a habibit of proving me wrong atm, i just dont see him as capable of running to a high 170s figure

    • The horses he has beat over fences though , regardless of the distance, have done nothing for the form since. He's just been incredibly well placed over fences imo. The one proper chase race he's had, he's lost. His Hurdles form was also pretty desperate.

At first glance Edwardstone chase form doesn't look much better until you dig into the Greaneteen form who he walloped in the TC.

      Energumene is no 8/11 shot.

Yeah, the arkle form is strong given the circumstances and subsequent form of Blue Lord.
And that tingle creek win against a Paul Nichols targetted horse was awesome.

He arguably has ran to a high 170's rating already.
They gave him 170 for the tingle creek for beating a 171 rated horse 9 lengths and a 176 rated horse 15 lengths.

        • Greaneteen isn't a particularly reliable yardstick

Rarely runs two races in a row the same

He travelled and jumped like a dream at Exeter to win a handicap off a high mark

Very possible he left his Tingle Creek run behind there, nicholls got him much fitter for fhat run than he had the year before

Greaneteen is the horse you are saying energumene is isn't he?

An average horse who has been incredibly well placed by Nicholls to win 3 weak grade 1s but has lost every time he's run in a good race

Would be one of Nicholls best training performances winning the races he's won with greaneteen

Hopefully they both turn up in a couple of weeks time and one of us can wipe the egg off our face post race hahaha

Blue lord has improved vastly since the race though hasn't he? Much better horse now than he was then

last time was the first time he'd ever really galloped out to the line

It's a hard division to weigh up really as there are a lot of very average horses knocking about after the top few horses there is a large drop off

              I love Energumene.
But the prices for the 2 in a match are wrong.
And I love that sort of betting market.

              And form is form.
Could spend all day saying this and that.
These 2 are probably the only reliable yardsticks in the division right now.

The tingle creek and arkle are both very solid pieces of form.
              Energumene has solid form also.

Even money each of 2 - energumene all day long for me.
At the prices for the CC now, Edwardstone all day.

It was an awesome performance (hate that word..... awesome not performance) wasn't it. Thought he was good but not that good. Blew me away. Shame he fluffed his lines next time but he jumped round brilliantly without his jock and really enjoyed himself so it felt like a good run nonetheless. Can't wait for the Clarence House whatever the result. We are being proper spoilt this season.

P.S. I bloody love eggs so if it's left on my face I'll willingly lick it off

It was a rubbish arkle other than edwardstone really

Gabynako, war lord, riviere detel, haut en coulers

Blue lord has turned himself inside out by the look of it, finally matured not the same horse who ran in the arkle. He's always had the ability but never really put it all together

really hope we get that clash in the Clarence house

though at the same time one of them winning cosily would kind of ruin the champion chase as we'd have a very short fav

Like I said, we could go back at form all day long.
Energumene's Champion chase don't look that good in hindsight does it ?

Exactly, the problem with analysing form is the "yes but, no buts"

A but to one man is not a but to another, and for some men all buts are the same, except some buts are different.
I personally like Big Buts -

                        • Brilliant Q.

Don't get me wrong guys Energumene is a very good horse....... but at this point he's no 8/11 shot.

                          Comment

                          • I agree with this. While it's hard to have anything else ahead of Energumene a stone bruise, a niggle, or hitting one in the race make the prices against him look attractive. It's a race ripe for an each way play now, particularly as you get 3 places, when it's unlikely 8 will turn up.

Nube Negra at 33/1 is too big on normal Festival ground, and Editeur de Gite 25/1 pinging away at the front may not be easy to peg back. He's the type to make it a real test and put jumping under pressure.
Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more I sweat, the luckier I get.

                            • Agree Spectre. F Sivola is 200/1 for this year's race. Says a lot about the form of last year's race. Hope EDG does ping off in front as it'll set the race up nicely for Eddie to swoop. He seems best off a fast pace with something to chase.

                              • Energumene broke potentially the best horse in training in defeat then went on to win 2 Grade 1’s.

Imo doesn’t matter about the form of his races so much, horse is a beast. I think WPM going for round 2 in the champion chase as opposed to stepping him up said it all in terms of how they rated him at Closutton.
