    2-1+ would be fine.
    I'd obviously want bigger.

      • If they announce anything definitive now about Honeysuckle then they are being silly and emotional.
If one of the top 2 in the market don't make the festival and then the other slips up on the day ??
If they retire her, I could get that.

It's another case of letting them see through their post juvenile racing year. Willie can afford to do that, and so can some of his owners. I wouldn't be giving up on him next year.

Listening to Kenny Alexander Post race, it was definitely out of the equation Pendil, everyone knows they've absolutely no chance of beating Con Hill, and they were adamant they had her as good as can be in regards to winning this weekend. She obviously ain't as good as she used to be, she's just lost that turn of foot, but that's no negative on her, she's been some mare and a great watch these past few years.

I know we're done this before and I've bored everyone to death over this but I see it as a massive dilution of the festival if your reigning champion hurdler has a non G1 alternative she can attempt.
You're absolutely right of course, she owes no-one a thing, but I'd prefer her to retire than see her line up 40 mins later than she should.
Plus, the Mares hurdle looks to have the most depth I can ever remember, if Honey has regressed in the past few weeks it won't take much more regression for her to be vulnerable in that race...

                  • I'm with you to a point, and if the mares didn't exist they'd likely be some of them going Champion Hurdle and one or two going Stayers making those championship races bigger fields and more competitive but...

Given that it does exist as a race, I think Honeysuckle should probably be going for the Mares this year, as the race she has a realistic chance of winning. It would then be up there as one of the best looking races of the week. I guess that may be disappointing in itself! But if all these mares did turn up it would be some race.

Where as you throw them all in the Champion Hurdle this year and they're 15 lengths behind Constitution Hill.

Yep, couldn’t disagree with that, but I just find the whole reigning champion not defending their crown thing can’t be good for racing.
I hope she’s retired and in the breeding shed by the time the tapes go up…

                      • Don't see it as bad for racing if she doesn't defend her Champion Hurdle. Why? Provided the top two get to the Champion Hurdle I'd rather see her in the Mares race where she will have a fair chance of winning rather than battling for 3rd place in the CH. And if she's well then let everyone in England see har one last time and be cheered off into retirement at the home of jumps racing. They've picked the correct race for her at every festival so far and hopefully they will do so again

                        • It’s always been a farce and this just highlights it. If owners and trainers take what people are suggesting is correct - to reroute Honey to the mares because she can’t win the Champion, then why bother at all?

Should State Man and Vauban concentrate on Aintree or Punchestown? Should we not even bother running the race and just give Constitution Hill the win now?

I understand the arguments behind the mares programme, black type, encouraging mares to race longer etc etc, but I do not believe there should be mares only races at the festival.

Save it for elsewhere, make a big promotion of it at another track and meeting.

As a lover of the sport, I want to see sport. I want to see the best ten two mile hurdlers race each other. I don’t want 2 or 3 of them to take in a different race 40 mins later simply because they are given the opportunity for an easier win.

PS - get rid of the Ryanair too…

It's only a personal view Moby, but I hate the dilution the modern festival has created so I'll never be a fan...

I get the dilution argument but we are where we are and I'm very much with you Moby123 .

There's nothing I'd like more than to cheer Honeysuckle into the winners enclosure after the Mares Hurdle next month.

That would be a fitting finale to a fabulous racing career - and I doubt there would be a dry eye in the house.

But the bottom line is that it would just be great to see Honeysuckle at the Festival one last time - and win or lose in whichever race she contests I imagine Honeysuckle's mere presence would be the highlight of the day for racing fans whatever special treat Constitution Hill serves up.

                              • I've only had 1 bet in the Champion - Honeysuckle at 11-1 after the Hatton's Grace.
                                This looks lost.
I also dabbled on the exchange on Sir G, but laid off for a free roll for 150pts. Also dead by looks of it.

But I've just backed State Man at 3-1 with B365 NRNB BOG.
If anything happens to CH before the race he's a 1-2 shot.
And any mishaps in the race and he might just win.

Probably only a bet for people without much in the race so far.
