It is very rare for a horse to be thrown into a grade 1 open chase on their first start outside of novice company... and we have two this weekend! Happily take both on considering the record of Turners and Brown Advisory winners in open races. Might Bite is the last BANC winner to land a grade 1 when winning the King George, he prepped in a listed race at Sandown first though. He subsequently never won again, losing his next 11 starts. The only other in the last 10 years to win a grade 1 was Don Poli who won the Lexus Chase, again prepping in an easier Aintree listed race. He never won again under rules after that in 13 starts. Obviously there has been plenty of bad luck in that time, Monkfish only ran once since in a chase and Topofthegame sadly never raced outside of novice company.
From the Turners, Defi Du Seuil is the last to win a grade 1, landing both the Tingle Creek and Clarence House, though did prep in the grade 2 Shloer Chase first. Yorkhill is a rare example of one going straight into a grade 1 from his novice season, where he was 8th of 12 in the Christmas Chase despite starting at 7/2. Black Hercules did go straight into the John Durkan where he was last of 5 despite starting as 2nd fav. Vautour did win the Ryanair but was beat on his first start in a grade 1 when 2nd in the King George.
For those that want some confidence then Galopin Des Champs won his first start in open company, when winning the grade 1 John Durkan at 2/9f, though it wasn't the strongest of renewals of the race (Fastorslow wasn't the force he is now).

The above are declared so it's still a decent looking race!
Ma Jacks Hill is Gordon's main one in the bumper so it will be interesting to see if Posh Josh is correct that this is 'the one'. Personally he looked a big chaser in his P2P but that wouldn't necessarily exclude him from being a decent bumper horse.

Mossy Fen Road entered over hurdles at Hereford on Wednesday (2m and 2m4f). They seem have decided to skip bumpers with him. He's from my list of 4yo P2P horses to follow.

As a Gidleigh Park BANC backer I’m in two minds as to what I want to see tomorrow, surely 2m2f around Kempton will see him taken off his feet by Iberico Lord.
Maybe if GP fences well he’ll give the fav something to think about, it should tell Harry what distance is going to be suitable going forward anyway.
