Agree. The two times he's ran on decent ground he's been desperate including at Punchestown last year.
I thought the rain was due at the course today though ? Is that not happening now ?
Rain due at some time this afternoon, approx 5-7mm.
But its currently good to yielding and probably riding faster aswell, even if the rain comes in the next half hour it might not be soon enough IMO.
Yeah I'd say if yesterday was mid season, he'd have been pulled due to the ground, but I reckon they've just thrown him at it and hope for the best knowing he's got the summer off after the race. Definitely a horse that copes better with plenty of cut in the ground and as an antepost proposition for next years stayers, he is one I couldn't be going near due to the ground concerns.

100%. Can’t have horses in the portfolio that are that ground dependent.

Are we sure he is ground dependent? I mean he does seem to prefer soft, but could yesterday not have just been a poor day at the office? There is a relatively small sample size to go on. I was disappointed with the run yesterday, but he did stay on quite nicely and I didn't come away thinking he needs soft ground, more that he might prefer it.
Benjy may have a point too. His was a similar distance behind SDB here, so he might just be a couple of lbs behind where he needs to be to win a stayers. And as a 6yo, he could find it.
I actually think Asterion Forlenge looks a bet at 33/1. Clearly has a preference for RH tracks and was likely fresher than his rivals (bar KD). But by the same token, he was in bounce territory it being the second run in quick succession after a layoff. 10yo next year, but the Stayers seems to have done away with age trends recently. He does seem pretty lightly raced too.

Fair point, he could just be short of the class needed too.

I'd tend to agree with this. I think a lot of the ground dependencies are also based on his runs over 2m, which was obviously too short for him and was only going to be exaggerated on better ground. I can't imagine Sire Du Berlais or Flooring Porter would go too well over 2m on good ground because they're 3m hurdlers, not 2m hurdlers.
I think it's fair to say THP has a preference for soft ground, but I'm not convinced that yesterday shows he only goes on soft ground. The bigger issue is likely to be that he's just not good enough (a la Benjy)... or not good enough yet (a la Exar) if I want to be optimistic for my antepost position!
Right on cue. Mind you, he’s had a couple of well touted ones get turned over of late.
Not kept up with the bumpers over the last couple of weeks but had him in the tracker.
Surprised to see him out so late. Thought Welcom to Cartries would have been out for Nicholls by now but presumably they are happy enough not to send him to a bumper this season.

Henderson often runs some of his good ones post Cheltenham or in the lead up to the festival. I assumed this would be the case for this fella as he wasn’t one that should be wasting time in bumpers.
