Hindsight and all that but Allaho it was the first year he was actually consistent, just because something goes off shorter and wins in isolation doesn't mean it was necessarily a good price months out. What I'm erring at is still approach the shorty types with risk attached as it's not often plain sailing(Even Honey was 4/5 for a lot of the morning on the day and the 2s a year out was purely in case of injury with the lack of competition last season), but if you think the price is value at any point pull the trigger.

    • Where would this leave Bob for next year if he reverted to hurdles, Champion Hurdle is the only option surely? If he did get back on song and improved could he compete with Honey?

Stayers? They don't have much else for it that comes to mind and I don't think there's enough evidence to be confident distance is the issue, he just isn't a top level chaser nor looks like he ever could be. Of course there's the possibility that like Envoi Allen, his best days are already in behind. I think it was Archie who pointed out that his dams progeny don't exactly have a track record for racing longevity. CH is an option I suppose, early days obviously, but he'd have to show a fair bit for it not to feel like a wasted dart given what could line-up.

It would certainly be a tough race if Constitution continues to improve and heads there. Would need to see some evidence that stayers was viable considering his speed in the Ballymore. With the limited options and potential competition his best days may well be behind him in respect of Cheltenham. If that happens at least fate helped a profitable send-off (for some) in the Turners

Between a rock and a hard place

Doesn't have the speed for a champion hurdle and can't see him staying well enough to win a stayers hurdle

            • I guess we need to figure out Mullins' bumper horse with Barry The Butcher going to HDB

                • Probably won’t even hear of it until Christmas entries.

Nick Rockett could be good, but he’s been entered a couple of times already and it would be odd for Willie to start his Champion Bumper horse out 11 months in advance.

The Gunner Yeats another intersting purchase although I think he’ll be 6 next year.

                  • Mullins best bumper horse won't even be known yet by the yard and may not have raced in a P2P. Likely not even named yet. I don't think Facile Vega had even been put in any real work at this point last year to see how good he was.

Best to just wait for the whispers in the Autumn. Worked out for Facile Vega. Eventually worked out for Ferny Hollow but you can also get stung like when Power of Pause was the talking horse and then couldn't win a bumper.

With regards to Barry the Butcher, Henry doesn't really target any of his horses at a proper bumper campaign. If kept to bumpers he will either get one run next year or Henry may think he's a bit special and campaign him a bit different.

I can't actually think of a good, early 4 year old P2P winner that has then been sent to Henry early for them to plan a Champion bumper campaign.

With him being owned by the Mulryans, we can assume the Ballymore 2024 will be the plan (if aimed at bumpers in 2022-23) and Henry will have the Ballymore 2023 and 2024 winners in his stable.

Why do you think he would not be sent hurdling DS? Plenty of four years old have in the past. Where did people find out about BTB going to HDB?

Josh Stacey on Twitter. He now says the trainer hasn't been 100% confirmed so could still go to Willie.

5 year olds find it tough to win the novice hurdles at Cheltenham. 2013 was the last time a 5 year old won the Ballymore (when more than half the field were 5 year olds) and they have a better record in the Supreme with Constitution Hill winning it this year but the older horses do have a better record winners wise.

He does look special though and maybe he will go straight over hurdles but Willie and Henry look to have some decent horses going hurdling next season so a bumper campaign would make sense to me, moreso if he is with Willie than Henry.

Thanks DS. I suspect if he’s with HDB he’ll go hurdling whereas if he’s with Willie I think he’ll go the bumper route.

with regards to Willie’s #1 bumper horse, does he not have a full sister to Facile Vega? I don’t know what she’s called mind you. Anyone heard anything about her?

…I was fortunate enough to score some cracking goals at the likes of Old Trafford and Elland Road but my sister was useless at footy.
