That whole article in the RP is geared towards CH staying over hurdles next season, so its really odd you just want to ignore this and back him over fences.
im not backing anything at the minute, but I take comments like this with a pinch of salt. He will be 6 next year which is a prime age for the arkle. Sprinter Sacre only had a race or 2 more than him at this stage. I just cant see nicky henderson keeping this horse over hurdles next season when hes got such an amazing record with 2 mile chasers.

Hasn't he got another pretty decent tool for the 2mile chasing novice division?

Just look at nicky hendersons history with these types though. He has consistently sent his best horse chasing the following season. Of the two, I can see Jonbon lingering in hurdles for another season. I would be baffled if CH stayed hurdling.
If they decide to take on Honeysuckle at Punchestown, to me that will be a solid indication they have an eye on going chasing next season, as this could be the only chance they have at a crack at Honey.

I can’t see Jonbon improving that much over hurdles so he’ll end up in no man’s land if he does. I’d very surprised if he’s not chasing next season.

          • Anything over hurdles was a bonus for Jonbon, built for a fence.

CH nearly went Champion Hurdle this year, he'll be there next year.

            • Jonbon is also a year older, so makes sense to stagger their step up to fences.

              • Constitution Hill - the highest-rated novice hurdler in @Timeform history, only 5, would be wild not going Champion Hurdle route.

I caught Rich Ricci being interviewed live on stage at Cheltenham by Martin Kelly (Sky Sports Racing) and Willie's quote on the Ballymore is in the Racing Post comments in the race analysis

                  15Mar22 Cheltenham (16.5GS, RPR 132)

"Gaelic Warrior ran a great race. On the whole he jumped well. We would have probably liked a bit more juice in the ground. He is a nice prospect for next season. It didn't help him how he jumped the last but that is racing. There was only a short head in it and you can if an and all day but he ran a great race. I hope there will be plenty of good days with him as he is a real jumping type. We will stay novice hurdling next season as he is still a maiden and he will be back here for the Ballymore next year "- Willie Mullins, trainer.

It looks like Willie has promised Rich Ricci a targeted retrieval mission at Cheltenham, and is going to give up the rest of this season, to avoid losing his novice status, and go with Gaelic Warrior as his plan to come back for the Ballymore.

He will be on the Champion Hurdle trail, for sure.

                    • I really like the look of mercurey, not sure which race he goes for, I’m leaning towards the supreme. Ricci rich travelled over to gowran to watch his debut and I get the impression that he is very highly regarded. If facile vega goes down the ballymore route then I think mercurey is the play here. Jonbon at 10/1 for the arkle also interests me but he may go for turners. Champ hurdle looks like a bit of a minefield and difficult to work that one out with potentially con hill, honeysuckle, sir gerhard and vauban. What a race that could be though!!!

Supreme for me even without the comments about Gaelic Warrior being targeted at the Ballymore. Rich is likely to have a good squad of novice hurdlers next season so he won’t be able to avoid Facile Vega with them all.

Ive backed Mercurey in the Supreme at 20/1.

They seemed gobsmacked with how well he cruised home on debut, and its only his age that stopped him running in the Champion Bumper.

Given GW goes to the Ballymore route for the Ricci's then Mercurey as a 5yo too, looks fine to be placed towards the Supreme.
Would love to see him once more this season, maybe in a 4yo Winners Bumper.
He looked all class and is No2 in my hit parade of Bumper horses this season behind FV, and maybe not that far behind come the autumn.

                            • On the subject of Mercurey, his price could well have an expiry date attached to it which may force a few hands. After he won his bumper Mullins said that he was unlikely to go to Cheltenham but could go for a winners race in Limerick and then on to Punchestown. If he were to win at Punchestown then he’ll be given a significant trim.

                              • Where will they aim Goven next season? He looked fantastic winning his maiden, but obviously having done that he’ll be into open company next year.

                                Straight over fences?
Test the water in early graded hurdles?
                                Hide him for a handicap?
