Isn't it bizarre that we have a horse running today at 20-1, that if it finishes in the top 6 will go off single figures for the final ??

This qualifying thing needs to get binned.
By all means have some sort of qualifying system but the current one is shit.
When I criticise something I normally like to offer a solution.
But can't be arsed to think of one today, and it wouldn't be that interesting really.
Win and you're in? Put on enough qualifiers to fill the max runners for the race. Any places not taken up get offered to the second place finishers in order of rating (highest first, obviously).

I'm desperate for some form of "win and you're in" qualifying system for some of the national spots. Welsh National, Classic chase, GN trial, Eider etc to try and breathe more life into them

I really like the format of having qualifying races and making it a tale throughout the season, but it what other sport would you get a benefit for qualifying lower?

I'm a total idiot on such things, but maybe keep the Pertemps qualifiers out of general handicaps and it has it's own weighting on qualifiers in the final where the winners carry less weight? How about that?

        Q,

I love that one handicap hurdle is different, and has Qualifiers through the season, as it gives us much more chance to assess what may be running in it.

Having another hurdle race, similar to the Coral Cup, Martin Pipe and County Hurdle with giant cards of entries published three weeks before the Festival would be an unappealing change

So I am with you on retaining a Qualifier based Handicap Hurdle, maybe they could tweak the rules a bit, maybe anyone finishing 1st is guaranteed a run, if they enter/declare for the Final, whatever their rating.

Could extend that to 2nd places, too, but that may be more tricky, given the number of qualifiers and the max field for the Final.

This is totally interesting and hence why i raised it last night. I wasnt aware Dalton had to win today to get in. DDP has to be in the top 6 and yes probably go off favorite in a few weeks ??

Could be first second and third and then ratings based.
Including the 1.2.3 from the previous seasons final.

Just that small change would help.
Fourth and fifth horses could enter but only get in as reserves, if the others don't take up the entry.

....perhaps the prize money for the final should reflect horses performance in the qualifiers. A horse winning a qualifier and the final gets significantly more than a horse who finished 6th and wins the final.

                Yep bonuses would help.

Yep, been a discussion point for years, why do we penalise the better horses for being better ?
What we have now is a far cry from what handicapping was introduced for and like most things in life people will always find a way to take advantage, and the current qualifying system not only allows it, it almost encourages it.
I’ve said it before, if stewards had any balls the system would be so corrupt...

                  • Dalton Highway is my one to take from that. Made up some ground to get into the places and Kennedy just kept him at it to qualify without being to hard on him.

Looks far too low in the weights.
NRNB has to be the only way to back that.
