I know what you mean HE but the race does have a pretty impressive list of winners lately - and it seems to be getting stronger.

Sire du Berlais (x2), Presenting Percy, Delta Work, Mall Dini, Call The Cops, Fingal Bay and Holywell are a pretty classy bunch - and I just wonder whether The Bosses Oscar has the potential to reach their sort of level.

Maybe I'm being harsh - he's had 5 runs over hurdles so there's plenty of time for him to improve.

But I was rather doubtful about the form of the Martin Pipe - with the possible exception of you know who - and I'm not in any hurry to throw any more cash at TBO on the basis of his latest run.

Will a competitive Pertemps over 3 miles with a stiff uphill finish suit him any better. Again I'm a bit doubtful.

I see Codd rode him in his 2 ptps over 3 miles last year and it's interesting that he failed to get him home (on good ground) in the second one after taking it up two out. The horse who beat him hasn't been out since but didn't look star material before he fell on his debut a month before beating TBO.

But I hope you're right and I'm wrong HE.

Winning handicaps at the festival is getting no easier that’s for sure, you either need to be a graded animal or be properly plotted imo. I think the big guns in terms of owners such as JP & Gigginstown & the top trainers just have the depth of quality that they have no objection to hinging their entire season on one day in March, whereas others that may only have one or two horses in their ranks of proper graded quality will want to get the most out of them every time they run.

...handicaps seem condensed, whilst it’s good to have a weight advantage it might be more about getting a run.

Happy with that but he will be hammered for winning so well, managed to get the 50s with a boost 2 out with Hills anyway

Deffo stays , impressed me how he travelled off what looked a fast festival pace and then quickened off it. alot to get excited about even with a hike in the weights looks a player comes March. obviously loves cheltenham so well done with your 50s

Looking at the midweek entries, I noted that at 3.05pm on Thursday Newbury have a Pertemps Qualifier.

most interesting in the 5-Day decs for me, are Third Wind (4th in the Final last March) and Dreal Deal from Ireland (off 122 plus a 7lb winners penalty).

Dreal doesn't go trainer confirms it in tomorrow's paper, looking at going up in grade and keeping him up 2M by the sounds of it.

Had our old favourite Mohaayed added to this market before he runs tomorrow in the qualifier, Hills have put him up at 40/1

So which horse is Gordon going to win the Pertemps with next year?

By my reckoning the list is surprisingly short.

I've had a quick look at every horse Gordon trains and IMO only four of his horses fit the bill.

They are: The Bosses Oscar, Floueur, Escaria Ten and Fakiera.

                          Just to recap:

Gordon's won the last 3 runnings of the Pertemps.

In the last five years Gordon's nine runners have all finished in the first five.

Nine of the last 10 Pertemps winners were rated at least 138.

Apart from Sire Du Berlais, the last eight winners had no more than nine runs over hurdles.

And none of the last six winners were older than seven - apart from SDB.

The Bosses Oscar (25-1 with PP) fits the bill to perfection. He'll be six next year, has had just 5 runs over hurdles, winning recently off a rating of 137 in a race over 2m 6f - the longest trip he's tried. I've had slight reservations about him - possibly over-hyped - since his 5th in the Martin Pipe. But he will surely be aimed at the Pertemps and probably have the benefit of Davy (3 wins in this in the last 5 years) in the saddle. Difficult to ignore and a reasonable price.

None of the other three are currently quoted in the Pertemps market and it's purely guesswork on my part that they could end up with this race as their target.

Floueur will also be 6 next year and has had just four races over hurdles. He's rated 141 and was last seen finishing almost 15 lengths behind Run Wild Fred and Lord Royal - both receiving weight from Floueur - over 3m at Punchestown on heavy ground in February.

Escaria Ten will be seven next year and has run four times over hurdles. He's rated 132 and was beaten almost 20 lengths in the Martin Pipe. But he'd previously won twice over 3 miles on soft and heavy.

Fakiera will be six next year and has had four runs over hurdles. He finally got off the mark by winning a maiden at Fairyhouse on Tuesday - getting up on the line to win by a nose and earn a rating of 142.

This is the dark horse of the four IMO and could prove a decent each way bet IF he ends up in the Pertemps.

He's already come up against some classy rivals in his short career and in every race (I've watched them all) he's looked like he would benefit from a step up in trip.

Fakiera was beaten 5 lengths in fourth behind Uhtred (received 5lbs) in a bumper on his racecourse debut and was then fourth again - beaten around 18 lengths by Forged in Fire (received 7lbs) and Ferny Hollow (levels) in another bumper last December.

His first hurdle start came in February when he was second of 25 - beaten 5 lengths by Entoucas (gave 1lb) over the minimum trip.

Then a month later he was second of 20 beaten less than two lengths by Jon Snow (levels) in another maiden over 2 miles 2 furlongs at Leopardstown.

Three weeks after that he was second of 16 - finishing almost 3 lengths behind Politesse (gave 1lb) when sent off odds-on back over 2 miles.

Then came this week's win at Fairyhouse.

Fakiera hasn't looked a world beater so far but a trip may well bring about improvement - and he's been far from disgraced in good company so far.

Three of the last five Irish winners of this race were novices and if Gordon ensures Fakiera's handicap mark doesn't stray much over 140 he could be in with a shout.

The Bosses Oscar seems to be the safe betting option as surely this will be his target and 25-1 is pretty decent.

I can't find Fakiera priced up in any market so, as I say , this is pure guesswork that he might end up in the Pertemps. I'd certainly be interested to see him priced up in the any race market. Probably get better odds than sounding alarms bells over G Elliott and Pertemps.

                            Decent bit of research NC200

Having already backed The Bosses Oscar, I'm in agreement with plenty of that.

Requesting the 'any race' price may result in a standard 25/1 price...

I was kinda thinking Sire Du Berlais isn't a million miles from ending up back here BUT The Storyteller since has made me think Gordon plotted them last year and this year the handbrake is well and truely off so it's more unlikely now the SBD does revert to 'caps.

What that does mean though is that he must have more than one thing on his mind for this race.....so very good idea looking in to it!

I don't have a notebook, I use this forum, but Fakiera is the one I'll look forward to you keeping on top of....

Brilliant research Norton's.....you should be charging for this sort of info ! Already on The Bosses Oscar but agree, Fakiera does fit the bill beautifully. Keep it quiet though...
