  • The handicapper had no choice but to drop langer dan

He finished last and the stewards deemed no funny business was going on

As usual the stewarding is the real issue as everyone who follows horse racing new langer dan was going to be a non trier and hes now been rewarded for it

But when the stable state pre-race that he’s ‘blowing away the cobwebs’, I think it’s obvious he’s a non-trier and should ignore the run. Anyway, it’s a gift for plenty who have him backed.

It's not really the handicappers job to decide that

It's the stewards job to identify and penalise non triers

If they do nothing the handicapper has to take the run at face value

That’s fair enough if trainers say nothing pre-race. But when they’re publicly quoted as saying he’s out to ‘blow the cobwebs away’ it’s gets a little bit silly to then go and drop the horse.

I’ve no axe to grind over it, but I’m sure that’s not traditionally been normal policy? Even if for arguments sake the handicapper was 100% happy no funny business, horses sometimes just don’t run their race do they. Seems way more reactive than he’s typically been to me.

Can't particularly moan at that. Depends if connections think he has got enough in hand to win or just take their chance in a grade 1. I think County would be favourite over the Martin Pipe though for the handicaps.

                • That's a good mark if they think hes a grade 2/grade 1 standard horse going forward

Agreed, it’s 1lb less than GDC last year

                      I’m happy with that.

As a lot of us think he is up to being a Supreme horse, he’d probably need to be mid 150’s to be going close there, so can’t argue with 141.

                      • "Hopefully, Galopin Des Champs Mark II doesn’t turn up for the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ this year. He is the smallest of our team and what he lacks in height he makes up for in determination. He had a small little setback in the autumn and just had a hind suspensory flare which wasn’t a catastrophic injury which meant we had to give him some time off. I had to run him at Taunton the other day as I needed to get a run into him and there wasn’t anything suitable anywhere else on a more galloping track or over two and a half. He was never going to win over two miles on decent ground around Taunton and of course I would have liked to have seen him finish closer up the field and how could you say finishing last was a great result, but it was more how he has been since. His coat is just a little bit behind Nube Negra and Protektorat but his fitness is there and give him two weeks and it just has to come together on the day. The mark is acceptable, and it gets him into the race, and he stays the trip well. You have to drop him in and if you bring him forward, he does too much and falls in a heap. I’m chuffed to bits with him, and we are not only sure he will get there but also that he is the best shape we could get him in. Taunton has done its job and put the finishing touches to his preparation."

Lol, yes I know he will mate - was just jesting the proposed irony if jogging round the back & being dropped 3lbs meant he actually missed.

Still think he’ll bump into an Irish novice that’ll be 2 stone well in though….having said that they’ll need to be!
