He was very strongly backed on his second run but his jumping fell apart including one really bad mistake. You could argue they weren’t trying at all last time out, but if they were happy enough to try and win on the horses second start as the betting indicated, then I don’t think they would have been too concerned with finishing a bit closer last time out if they could?, To try and ensure he got in by getting rated a bit higher. I still think he’s capable of running a big race if he improves his jumping, I just don’t think his poor displays have been 100% by design, but probably partially.
That may well be a very fair observation riccirich, I don't agree entirely but you could easily be right...

      It's what handicaps have become...
At least he has the benefit of showing previous decent form and a known level of ability though. Bit easier to see for the average punter than a juvenile that's never even placed.

But aye, handicaps aren't my main game for this very reason.

      • Reading back through this thread I’m glad to see some more support for Sam Spade from other members. I think he’s one of the best handicapped horses of the entire week on a line through Perseus Way he has almost a stone in hand.

His tendency to jump right after cleverly being campaigned on only right handed tracks probably means he has another few pounds in the hand going left handed. He’s a big hardy looking animal that won’t be out of his comfort zone in the hustle & bustle of a race like this. Ben Pauling knows how to train a festival winner & it would be nice to see a favourite horse of mine in Le Breuil’s colours do the business again.

Samuel Spade was cut to a general 16-1 (from 20-1) for the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham after the odds-on favourite stormed home impressively under Luca Morgan.

Not many locals could recall a shorter-priced favourite at the track and the 2-13 runner overcame an exuberant jump at the first to land the 2m novice hurdle by 16 lengths for trainer Ben Pauling.

The winner was backing up a fine second to fellow Cheltenham hope Perseus Way in the Chatteris Fen Hurdle at the track in January.

"It wasn't ideal making the running but we didn't want a messy race," Morgan said. "He jumps left, so he'll be better going around Cheltenham. Kielan Woods is injured so the mount will be up for grabs and hopefully I could be in the mix."

Available at 25/1 (28/1) with Lads / Coral

          • Laddies boosted 28/1 is a no brainer imo I’ve been topping up all week. I really think he has a squeak!

Bit more insight from the trainer in this article…

Ben Pauling is confident Samuel Spade will give his connections ‘something to shout about’ at the Cheltenham Festival after booking his place in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle with victory at Huntingdon on Thursday.

You got a 4 you fancy DS?

I'd back a Denman Sacre yankee

Me too. I had another fiver on this morning with Hills at 40/1. He does look well handicapped.

                        My multiples record is awful!

Handicaps or general? Need to have a good look at the handicaps this week to reduce the shortlist.

Imagine was my biggest fancy but possibly too short now.

Like Grey Diamond in the Grand Annual per the 24 hour GA thread but it's touch and go whether he gets in.

Still like Inthepocket but the Ballymore is very competitive.

                        • More bullishness from Ben Pauling today re: Sam Spade

He said: “He’s done it the hard way. He was only bought in October and we’ve got three runs into him. His form has worked out superbly well – even the horse that finished second in his Kempton race (Chaos Control) won at Market Rasen by 20-plus lengths.

“He gave 8lb to Perseus Way at Huntingdon and was only beaten three lengths, and Perseus Way has gone on to be touched off in the Adonis since and is now rated 132.

“He is probably one of our best chances of the week and I’m looking forward to seeing him out again on the Tuesday of Cheltenham.”

                          • Ben Pauling also has Jipcot and Bad here. Tony Mullins has just mentioned Bad on the Paddy Power preview night. Anyone with French racing knowledge, how does the form of Jipcot and Bad stack up?

Jipcot is the most interesting with the listed success in France, any substance to the form?

Ben Pauling was on Luck podcast and Jipcot has only just arrived in the yard.
Said he might get supplemented for the triumph. So obviously thinks a lot of him.
