But not under a 5lb penalty, the rules seem pretty clear on that, on page 1 of every handicap thread.

Interesting though if you look at last year. His official weight for the MP was 11st 2, even though he was running off 11st 7 with the penalty. So say he wins well at Taunton and is put up to 145, then wins the imperial cup and gets the 5lb penalty. Then I’d imagine he’ll be shown as running at 11st 12, but is actually running at 12st 3. Dont think the rules could be anymore straightforward really
Let's move on.

Didn’t hunt ball win after the weights were released getting him 5lbs, but not taking him out of the race due to winning after this had happened and only incurring the penalty. I’m sure you get 5lbs for 1 win and 8lb for two wins post weights in a handicap like that. May also be misremembering this

The posts Above mine hadnt loaded at the time, and was clearly misremembering. Did find this though for clarity - “Hunt Ball defied 12st in 2012, despite the fact that the maximum weight allowed is officially 11st 12lb. He was allowed to take his chance in the race as he was rated 127 when the entries closed in February. He recorded a 10-length victory in a Kempton Park handicap chase before the weights were announced, which earned him a rating of 142, meaning that he was allowed to carry 12st, 2lb above the top-weight of 11st 12lb”

Definitely his trip for me.
He's probably worth his rating too, with not much extra to give.... so the assumption is that there will always be something 'well-in' against him. The kind of horse in a handicap I think will run to their mark which sets the standard that you have to beat...
So it's hard before the weights actually come out to know how good a bet it would be.
I think he'd go off shorter than he is though.
