Lot more places to go than temple bar though.
It's a bit shit really, a once and you're done type of thing.

My favourite was the confession box. still pricey but a lovely place and building.
Went to the D.R.F. this year , and Stayed at Cassidy's Hotel , Had a few beer's in the Confession box , interesting pub ..
My Favourite is Brannigans , just off O'connell Street ., near the Confession Box ,, Great Food , Great Guinness , about 6 euro's a pint .
Live sport's on T.V. ... The tram stop to Leopardstown is just around the corner from Cassidy's .
Little Tip ., when you come out from Leopardstown , Sandyford Tram Stop . get the Tram going away from Dublin .,
Get off at the next stop and then get on an Empty Tram back to Dublin ., .... If your Old and Need a seat like me and my mates .
And we got plenty of tips for cheltenham on the way back !! .
Like already said it clashes with the Rugby , so expect the Hotels to be a bit pricey. .
We are skipping next Feb , and do it again when No Rugby . .

IMO the best craic around is Lower Baggot Street, 3 of the best pubs in the world within 200m of each other
Totally agree robith, the pubs in that area (Toners, Doheny & Nesbitt & O'Donoghues) are full of locals enjoying a cracking night out, but Temple Bar is just wall to wall tourists paying through the nose to listen to someone knocking out a poor version of Sweet Caroline - you can still have a good night there, but they're all plastic Irish pubs in comparison.

            • Interesting that the Gallaghers betting has been taken down on a couple of sites, bet365 and laddies

Laddies is working fine for me. Noticed they've renamed it to the Turners Novices Hurdle on site now which may be why it has disappeared depending on the platform/site you are accessing the market through.

the holy trinity as I call them. Toners might just be the best pint in Dublin (Walsh's in Stoneybatter is in that convo though), nowhere better for the rugby than Doheny's and O'Donoghues is feral, especially when there's a session on

                      • Not even into November yet and I'm getting worried about the lack of horses...
In the 2 and a half mile chase category in particular, it's looking woeful.
                        Old Roan - 5 runners
Wetherby premier handicap tomorrow - 5 runners
Paddy power gold cup entries look really light and I struggle to see that filling up.
I'm not seeing much in of an improvement post-premierisation

                        • Bet 365 have suspended my cash out on Minella Premier for the Supreme. He’s still in the market. I noticed he wasn’t included in Henderson’s recent Unibet stable tour but was included in the Racing Post version which I believe was published prior to Unibet. Has anyone heard anything? I’m fearing an ‘out for the season’ announcement to follow.

                          • Ive got him covered (as i suspect many have) for the Supreme and Gallaghers. the first thing that struck me about that stable tour was the lack of mention for him. Sounds ominous

                            • I'm heading to Belfast today for the Down Royal Meeting. If any of you guys are there tomorrow or Saturday give me a shout.

But the reason for my post is about the discussion about where to stay for Punchestown and Leopardstown.

I'm also heading over for the Durkan Meeting at Punchestown at the end of November, and also for the Punchestown Festival next spring. I'd recommend staying in Naas to anyone considering going. I'm staying in the Osprey for both, but the Lawler's is just as good. Neither are particularly cheap, and booking early is essential, otherwise you'll have a trip into the course from somewhere each day which can be a pain in the arse. there are some other towns around, but they're pretty low key, and taxis aren't in abundance if you don't have any transport laid on. Buses from Dublin are an hour or so each way depending on where you are. Doable, but it makes for a long day, and more so if you're going for several days. If you haven't been put it on your bucket list. It's easily my favourite Festival.

I can't make the DRF, but Leopardstown is easy to get in to. Good public transport links from everywhere in and around Dublin. Temple Bar is fine for a night out but expensive. Dublin is an easy city to get around though so I'd just find the best hotel for your budget wherever it is and you'll get around the city and to Leopardstown pretty easily. This year it clashes with the Ireland v England Six Nations game, so accommodation prices will be pumped up, and if you don't book relatively early you might find some challenges getting places that are central and half decent. Plus Temple Bar will be horrendously busy.
Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more I sweat, the luckier I get.

                              • When we previously did Punchestown and DRF there were a few of us and I got us serviced apartments rather than hotels (Staycity) - that worked well for a group of us and locations were decent and central enough. We did that in Liverpool when going to Haydock as well, and find it works better than hotels for a group.

DRF is easy enough on the LUAS / shuttle bus, we did buses for Punchestown which were easy (except the bus driver that went to Naas racecourse by mistake!) but as said it does make for a long day, and an uncomfortable journey back to town after a good few Guinnesses and no facilities on board…

Gutted not to be at either festival next year but might be in Dublin for a midweek Fairyhouse fixture, so considering ticking that one off the list. Looks like a painful journey from Dublin centre though unless anyone knows of an easy way to do it?
