          • Saw this yesterday, 1000 accounts, wow, that's a lot of work!

Also the rumours are that he tried claiming back his losers as fraudulent transactions when he lost, which is actually why he was caught out as the bank raised concerns!

            • Five years seems pretty excessive if all he was doing was taking new customer offers! Although the above being true would make it seem far worse an offence imo.

              • Call it a cautionary tale for those who swap anecdotes of how they get one over on the bookies.

So was it more the case he was doing something other than just placing bets on these accounts? If a friend opens an account for me, I don't see any law broken if he's inputting the bets following my advice or me doing it for him, or am I being thick?

Nope, can't see anything wrong with a friend placing the bets for you, they are the one inputting all the information.

I believe he was doing more than just placing bets and cashing in on offers, from what I've seen.

Ya I had a look over a few threads on twitter, the Racing Post article is very misleading. I work in card payments industry myself so would be pretty familiar with the process - the case was brought by Santander Bank and not B365. He was supposedly claiming back all losing bets as chargebacks to Santander (basically saying he didn't authorise the money being taken off his card, so money would be returned). He would have got the funds back in all instances as the accounts would have been in somebody else's name, B365 would not have a leg to stand on if they chose to fight the claims. You do it once or twice, it's par for the course and not frowned upon. However if you do it multiple times in a short timeframe, you start to alert the authorities ie. Santander Bank and B365, and its pretty easy for them to identify patterns around the activity and then isolate the issue.

He did all the hard work with getting multiple identities and accounts open, however he fell down in claiming back money for losing bets (very naive and silly IMO). I liken it to being successful in multiple robberies, however you continue to use the same getaway car each time, which was registered in your name. He was done for card payment fraud, not actual identity theft/fraud. Anyone using accounts in other peoples names can now breathe a huge sigh of relief!!
