  • RacingTV have put together a really good and simple to send letter to MPs in relation to the gambling act review. Everyone will have their own opinions of course but I think many on here will be behind such a thing. All you have to do is fill in a couple of details, there's a template letter to send at the end. You can of course send your own letter to your MP via the usual methods if you so wish.

    • Speaking as someone who many years ago worked for an MP, please don’t just top and tail a standard template letter. All that happens is you just get a standard template response sent back to you.

Much better is to put a bit of thought into your response, make it personal, and if possible, request a meeting at the constituency surgery to talk about it. The current views in Parliament around the gambling review are entirely around protecting the vulnerable from harm. MPs haven’t heard the other side of the story, and it is much better for them to hear it first hand rather than just be sent a template.

This is great advice thanks Mighty.

They're all very different in my experience (We have 2 MPs here from different sides of the house, absolute chalk and cheese. One would move heaven and Earth, the other acts like the whole thing is a nuisance). I know a couple of people who've worked for them in the past and i've been involved in a couple of local campaigns, always found it to be a simple numbers game, if there's enough noise being made and letters going in, templates or otherwise, they'll spring to action. If it's 1 or 2 it's all easily ignored in lieu of bigger inbox headaches. Definitely write your own letter if you have time but if not then I think what RacingTv have put together is pretty good.

          • Atlantic Viking you’re absolutely right about the numbers game. Just speaking from personal experience, having worked for quite a few of them, the ones I worked with all tended to take things up with more vigour if they heard it in person. If it was a template letter, the usual practice was to get the researcher or caseworker to lift the standard template reply onto their own headed paper (I did this often enough!).

I’m tangentially involved now from an outside perspective on the Gambling Review for a trade association I’m doing some work with from next month (not specifically on affordability checks but it’s come up in discussions). It’s pretty clear that the settled view from the upcoming White Paper is that affordability checks may well be included, which is why writing to your MP now is so important before it gets set in stone.

Everyone on here should absolutely write to their MP, and do more if you can - have a meeting at their constituency surgery, write to the BHA etc. Otherwise this will just happen by default. There are those who are prepared to challenge this, but they need backing and vocal support.

I’ll be interested to hear what he’s got to say about Jim Bolgers doping allegations.

                    • I see 365 have now suspended cash out for bets on Bob, GDC, and Gerri Colombe as well as Sir G and DD. They are literally taking the piss this year. Price things properly if you’re worried about exposure!

Neither. Just bookies taking the piss.

If that lot are injured it'll wipe out nearly everyone's portfolios !

                              Yeah.

You need to be ruthless in how you handle your cash outs and books this season. Bet365 will wait for no one. I'm assessing my book daily at the moment, seeing if there is anything I need to amend. It's not ideal but feel it needs to be done.

Blimey, I get why they do it but I still don't like it. Think about half my bets are greyed out at the minute.
