if Quilixios was mine i would be priming him up for a handicap at Cheltenham next season, gaining plenty racing experience along the way as the mark came down, plenty time the following season to take on better horses, however i don't think CP are that kind of owner, they would rather watch their horse in grade 1 races finishing 3rd or 4th, i reckon , and so just another 5yo ex juvenile not quite as good as we thought , a waste of a season

Katchit was the last horse to go Triumph at 4 followed by Champion Hurdle at 5. Don't know of any other horse to go back to back as a 4 / 5 year old.Originally posted by FinalFurlong91 View PostComment

Not sure that Henry targets the Stayers, at all, he usually loves a crack at the Champion though.
Put that together with 5yo’s recent record in both races, and 2M would seem the odds-on preferred option.

I tend to agree Lobos. Elliott has always mentioned Quilixios as being a stayer, which tends to be the case with Triumph horses, and of course he wasn’t a novice last year, which is perhaps to what Elliott was referring. I think 25-1 for the Stayers Hurdle is quite generous. I think I’ll keep my powder dry until I know more but he’s one I’ll be keeping my eye on, for sure. I will add, having watched the triumph back a few times, to me the horse staying on was Zanahiyr not Quilixios.Originally posted by Lobos View PostComment

ALL the horses came back in after Galway and it’s a case of same old at this stage of the year. We’re just gradually getting them ready and no real big decisions have been made yet. Last season was brilliant but we missed out on the Champion Chase again and it’s the one race we’d love to win. It’s a really hot division this year with Shishkin there but we’ve got at least two big bullets to fire.
Chacun Pour Soi is good. Dermot Keeling, who rides him out, is happy with what he’s done. I’d imagine he’ll take a similar path to last year with the ultimate goal of the Champion Chase. Hopefully this is the year because we’ve got Energumene as well.
It was unfortunate that he missed Cheltenham but it was just a small knock and he came back and showed in Punchestown what he’s made of and he’s hugely exciting. I imagine we’ll try and keep both him and Chacun Pour Soi apart as much as we can.
Monkfish was disappointing in Punchestown but we’re putting that down to the fact that he maybe had a long season because he wasn’t at his best at Cheltenham either. I’d imagine we’ll be looking at all the big staying chases for him.
Appreciate It is good. He was brilliant at Cheltenham but just wasn’t firing on all cylinders before Punchestown so we missed that. He’s back in and he looks fantastic. I don’t know with him – does he go chasing? With the look of him, he’s an out-and-out chaser, a point-to-point winner, but he’s obviously not slow. I don’t know which way he’ll go but I think wherever he goes, he could do anything.
It’s a bit like the Vautour situation with him, any maybe Yorkhill. We could have went either way with those horses after their novice hurdle season. This fella is a bigger and wider type than both of those horses, but I think you have to go back to Bula to find the last horse to win the Supreme and the Champion Hurdle the following year, which will be a gap of 51 years come March. He looks every inch a chaser but the way he won the Supreme you’d have to consider the Champion Hurdle but the stats actually say it’s difficult.
Quite similarly to last year we have two top class bumper horses to go jumping with – Kilcruit and Sir Gerhard. It just goes to show you though, this time last year we were thinking Appreciate It was going to be a Ballymore or Albert Bartlett horse, so you never know until you start running them. They’re two very different horses.
Kilcruit is a light-framed, skinny horse, Sir Gerhard is a typical point-to-pointer. There’s not much between them on form. I think Sir Gerhard probably didn’t perform in Punchestown, and I think a lot of the horses that left Gordon’s ran well in Cheltenham and disappointed in Punchestown – it was probably a hard thing to do. Quilixios and Envoi Allen disappointed as well.
There’s not much between them and I don’t really know what way we’d split them up yet. We’ll just have to see how they go through the season.
It might be more straightforward with Allaho. Two and a half miles seems to suit him, the way he jumps and travels. He was catching Chacun Pour Soi at the finish of the Champion Chase at Punchestown, but I imagine Allaho falls into the Min bracket, for races like the John Durkan, given we have Energumene and Chacun for two-mile races.
Allaho can drop back to two miles no doubt, but I imagine the Ryanair is his main race.
Al Boum Photo is good but it might not be the case of the same as usual for him this year. I think last year, because of Covid, we maybe didn’t get the exact same preparation that we normally would so it’s not impossible to think that on a different day, he could have won the Gold Cup.
But he might be getting to the end of his prime now whereas there’s a few around him getting smack bang into their prime. Willie might consider taking in some of the bigger prizes through the winter with him but nothing has been decided yet.
Ferny Hollow is fine. He was back in training at the end of the season but he wasn’t going to be ready for Punchestown. We just got him back up to speed and he went out then a couple of weeks after the other horses went out. He’s back in again now. It’s mad when you look at his form, Bob Olinger and Appreciate It are two hugely exciting horses and he’s beaten them both. I’m still not sure how I managed to get him beat in two bumpers!
He falls into the could-be-anything category again and you have the option of going for a Champion Hurdle route or going chasing. Willie will have to sit down and think about that. He does look like a chaser, as a former point-to-pointer, but again he has all options open.
Saldier was in the Ebor but Willie wasn’t happy with him with his last bit of work and decided not to run him. He’s been kept on the go since Galway and he’s won a Morgiana before, so I imagine he could well end up there but there are some good flat races for him as well. Going back to the flat seemed to relight his fire a bit.
He’s always had a lot of potential, he just had a couple of unfortunate injuries and just seemed to lose his way a little bit, but with his head back in front now he could maybe do what we’d hoped he could do earlier in his career.
IT was a good summer. May wasn’t great but it got really nice about mid-June and the horses all look well.
Plenty of ours go home for the summer but a lot stay with us too. Some horses could be back in training from early or mid-July and the real winter horses start to come back in at the start of August. The timing depends on what you are targeting with them.
Honeysuckle had a lovely summer with Peter Molony at Rathmore Stud in Co Limerick. She looks brilliant.
We’ve decided to keep her over hurdles and I’d say she will have a similar campaign to last season, starting with the Hatton’s Grace, skipping Christmas and then Leopardstown, Cheltenham and Punchestown in the spring.
Our Grand National winner Minella Times recovered well after Aintree but it was never the plan to run him again after that and he went back to the McManus family’s Martinstown Stud for the summer. He came back looking brilliant. He won the National off 146 and ended up on 162 in the end-of-season Anglo-Irish ratings, though he is rated 159 in Ireland. We haven’t discussed plans for him yet.
The Gold Cup winner Minella Indo missed Punchestown with a bruised foot. He stayed with us for the summer and he had a great few months. We’re aiming him at the Champion Chase in Down Royal in early November, so it’s possible he could have an early start.
Put The Kettle On also stayed here for the summer. She enjoyed her holiday and is in fine fettle. The plan is to run her in the PWC Champion Chase at Gowran Park on Saturday, October 2nd. Her owners, the Dermodys, are looking forward to seeing her run at their local track.
She has won all four of her starts at Cheltenham and will hopefully go back there for the Shloer Chase in November. After that we will take a look and see where we are.
Bob Olinger missed Punchestown after giving a cough but he has summered well and is looking great. He jumps well, so we’re going chasing with him. He’s done very little wrong in his career to-date but this is a new season and a new test for him.
A Plus Tard has always been a good horse – he beat Chacun Pour Soi over two miles at Leopardstown one day – but the step up in trip to three miles seemed to bring out improvement in him last season. He won at Leopardstown over Christmas and then finished second to Minella Indo at Cheltenham. The one thing with him is he is definitely better going left-handed. For that reason we are looking at the Betfair Chase in Haydock on November 20th with him.
Quilixios was very good in the Triumph Hurdle and I’d say Punchestown was just one run too many for him. He has grown and strengthened into a gorgeous horse. We haven’t any firm plans for him and while it hasn’t been discussed I’d imagine he will stay over hurdles.
After being pulled up at Punchestown, Envoi Allen had a chip removed from his near hind joint. He had a nice break, is back cantering and seems really good now.

Restricted on Sports but keep your pockets open for Casino.
