Ruby says 16 horses are on the way for day 1 - that should give us a steer as to who goes where if anyone can be arsed to work it out!
Willie travelled over with them yesterday. It was a very rough passage.
I'd guess that the 16 are the ones that might be declared for Tuesday and he's doing his normal thing of leaving his options open until the last minute.
We really do have a massive problem with jumps racing in this country; those field sizes are awful. Obviously the Supreme and Arkle stand out but even the Ultima; only 16 in that??!
I’ve never understood the fascination with handicaps being given such large amounts of prize money.
The prize money for the county is not much less than the Supreme, so after one bad run why wouldn’t you try and hide the horses ability?
The Ultimas field size would go against this but I would be all for 1st season novices being banned from open handicaps. I don’t believe in 3 races at novice level you can accurately handicap a horse.

We definitely do but then we've been saying that for a couple of years now and 23 turned up for the Ultima last year, 24 in 2019. It'll be more about owners not being present this year, might be worth us trying to work out from this and previous years which owners are only going there for the day out
The owners not able to go I completely understand less decs and believe once all this shit is over we will get our festival back so personally don't think this will be the norm!

Looking at it this morning, and I know covid is having a huge effect, but my hype buzz totally died down. Hardly felt like the elite esteem we hold it in
Yep, it’s a very different Cheltenham, no crowd and smaller fields, but I’m thankful we have a Cheltenham and we have had all the chat and banter leading up to it. Kept me sane. Hopefully normal service resumed next year.
I think Covid has had a big part to play in terms of the number of runners this season. Owners may been keeping them at home
However, I do think we need to get rid of some of the races
The Mares Hurdle needs to go. Concertista should be in the CH, Roksana should be in the stayers, especially over decent ground. The rest should be in handicaps. We have the novice mares race to help bridge the gap for mares - just have to look at the high quality mares coming out of that race since it started.
There's 11 mares running in the mares hurdle, it has no use. Get rid
The NHC, get rid
Not keen on the Juvenile handicap. Its crap, none of the runners go on to further their career. Return back to the just having triumph, limit the race to 20
The Bumper is a waste of time. Get rid. Let the DFR have the biggest bumper of the year, get some of these GB owners/trainers to go over there
The Hunters Chase can go. Another waste of time. Run it somewhere else
Same with the Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle, it does not need to be ran at the festival. Run it elsewhere or easier in the season
The Cross Country and run it in Jan.... for me, its a terrible race. I know some people love the nationals but, for me the Festival is about class
I see no little of the Ballymore. Who trains 2 and a half G1 hurdlers? Get them into the Supreme or AB. If they arent good enough to be in a G1 then run them in the novice hurdle
