In my opinion it's always been for backing a horse before a debut run, with little risk if they flop as you can cash it out, rather than getting out of injured horses.

Them being slack previously was just a bonus...and still it's better than not having it at all....as Honeysuckle backs up this year for people on in the Mares Hurdle.

While they have undoubtedly sharpened their game this season the concession is still very good from an antepost betting angle. Being able to cash injured horses should always be seen as a bonus in my mind as you always had to be reasonably quick. The edge that still clearly remains for me is being able to back a horse that is highly likely to shorten and then being able to cash out later in the season when’s it materialises he is not as good as you thought. In many of these cases they push the price back out to what they were originally (so can cash for 5% loss), even though their chances of coming back and winning at Cheltenham at that stage are probably much bigger than the latest odds indicate

From their point of view, why wouldn’t they? They aren’t here to help you win money an escape bets that won’t win!

What do predict the outcome will be for Gordon today?? I’m not sure if they conclude their investigation today but I hope so. I think a 2 month ban and significant fine but I’ve got a sneaky feeling he may get off lightly with a strongly worded warning and commitment to change and be free to travel over to Cheltenham with his depleted squadron. Predictions??

think 6 month ban with 3 of that suspended, and a caretaker allowed to run the yard after he pleads to accept the verdict but not to punish his staff

Whatever they issue today, he will have right to appeal. I'm sure they know this, so will hit him with an OTT judgement to keep the public and media happy, safe in the knowledge that true redress will be given when the appeal is heard after things die down completely. He will be banned from attending meetings and will be allowed transfer his license over until that appeal is heard IMO.

If they follow the precedent of the Byrnes case it will either be a ban and minimal fine or large fine and no ban. They said that a ban was the equivalent of a fine due to the loss of earnings so would be disproportionate to give him a large fine too, which makes sense.

I really can't see how they can justify punishing Gordon even close to what Byrnes got and i think people will be surprised at what the punishment is, will perceive it to be lenient, which will of course cause outrage for the Twitter Nazis.

Byrne wasn't found guilty of actually doping the horses though, just not having oversight to ensure they weren't. There is a way wider reputational issue in this case

I think he'll receive a hefty fine, a 6-month ban, and he'll be allowed to send horses to Cheltenham under an assistant trainer, but wont travel himself.

I think something along these lines would be my prediction too.
