Yes it's expensive, and they take money every way they possibly can, but what won the Irish Gold Cup and the Punchestown Gold Cup in 2021? You might scratch your head and remember, but you don't have to think about what won the Gold Cup at Cheltenham the last two seasons, or most seasons in living memory for that matter, even the poorer renewals.
Kemboy and Clan des Obeaux is the answer to each by the way, and it was only a year ago, both fine Grade 1 horses, but not Gold Cup horses, and not so easily remembered.
The racing comes first for me, and the experience afterwards, and not the other way round. I can't imagine talking to my grandchildren saying I was there the day Clan des Obeaux won the Punchestown Gold Cup.
Cheltenham can and should do some things better, and it's up to us to say what we think about the experience by making our complaints. I'll be raising concerns about increased pricing, queues, stewarding, service, prizemoney, 5 days, etc, etc, and I'd encourage as many as people as possible to do so. But whatever the outcome I'll still be there. And as Istabraq says, I'll still be like a child at Christmas whatever they do or don't do.
There’s only one Cheltenham.
