  • Saw on twitter someone called 'theantepostman' with the following tweet this morning (before tipping Buzz for stayers):

Having an abundance of ante post bets for the Cheltenham Festival this side of Christmas can be a fast route to the poorhouse. Injuries, loss of form and a change of big-race targets can all result in many losing wagers.

What a loser...he's obviously not read Saxon Warrior's diary. Antepost starts 15th March 2022 for the following year if not before...

    • Has anyone ever done any research into horses who miss the Festival through injury? Purely anecdotally I associate Willie with having a higher attrition rate than the other top trainers - though this of course may simply be as a result of him having more high profile horses. This year he has ruled out Monkfish and James Du Berlais, last year Ferny Hollow, Energumene, French Aseel and The Big Getaway all missed the Festival when well fancied and prior to this Chacun Pour Soi, Saldier, Next Destination, Vautour, Min, Annie Power and Faugheen all missed out at some stage. These are off the top of my head - not sure if anyone has access to the prior years Out of the Festival threads which might throw up others. For Gordon I can only think of Malone Road, Champagne Classic and Death Duty in recent years so was wondering whether there was a greater threat of injury to a Willie ante post selection.

Whilst they can all impact us negatively I'd say those with 'number 7' syndrome will struggle more, I drink with a few mates on Saturdays and so many of them fall foul of this....
This should be it's own thread really shouldn't it robith ?

Will be something people will want to come back to and discuss in the future.

Trainers with the bigger pool of quality horses will naturally have more high profile absentees.
I haven't looked but the previous years out of festival threads aren't deleted, when they are 'unstuck' they simply fall into the list of threads which are shown in order of last post, so a quick look back through should take you to the March 21/20/19 etc threads...

I am going to add to the Irish Race Planning Diary after it’s natural February ending.

This will relate to the Irish Festivals in April at Fairyhouse and Punchestown, and should be a treasure hunt for end of season race planning for Willie Mullins in particular, and could give us some early opportunities to back for March 2023 before (or after) they run at Punchestown.

Also a post-Cheltenham review of the Festival could unearth some future trends for the following year too.

                • Willie on the weather......

When asked whether the current ground situation after an unusually dry November is frustrating, he replied: "We've been waiting for the rain to come for quite a while now but it just hasn't arrived.
"We got torrential rain here one Friday three weeks ago and I said to myself 'Here we go, the winter has arrived' but it proved to be a false alarm and we've had basically nothing since.

"I'm well used to it, to be honest. I remember when we put in our long gallop about 12 or 14 years ago – it was bone dry up until December. That can happen. You never really know what you're going to get and you have to deal with the hand you're dealt. We're sitting and waiting for rain to arrive and we'll keep waiting until it does."

                          • The thing where threads aren't updating properly is getting daft again. Always works well for a day or so after mods clear the cache or whatever it is you do, but then steadily goes downhill.

                            • Today has been a day of some stellar performances - A Plus Tard, Bob Olinger, Buzz, Bravemansgame. Saint Felicien is also obviously a horse going places, even if it's not the Supreme.
