I know I keep beating the same drum but anyone who fancies Monkfish to win the Gold Cup just can't ignore Elimay. Monkfish rated 163 and Elimay rated 155. Take into account the 7lb Mares allowance and there's 1lb between them. She looks like she'll stay all day long so the step up will suit. We know she handles Cheltenham and the big occasion, she jumps for fun and she's as game as they come. 6/1 v 40/1. No more comments your honour.

I’m not against the idea myself but do you really think Willie Mullins will give up a Cheltenham festival penalty kick to run in a race he has others for and no guarantee she’ll go close in? It’s just not what he does, he’ll take the easy winner every time.

Thing with envoi is due to his injury and the fall he was never given the chance to run to a big figure

We still don't really know how good he is

Monkfish seemed to feel the effects of some pretty hard races against latest exhibition at both Cheltenham and Punchestown

He didnt seem to have the same zest and exuberance about him, plus there was the rumours about the back injury

It will be fascinating to see how they match up with minella indo and a plus tard

Monkfish seemed to get worse as the season progressed. I would like to see him have a light campaign like abp. 1 or 2 runs then the gold cup. I just wonder if too many races bottom him or if he has a niggling back problem fewer races are the way to go.

If she runs in the GC then clearly she'd have a chance in it. Willie has plenty more he could aim at the Mares Chase. Even Willie would prefer a GC chance over a Mares Chase penalty kick wouldn't he ?

She'll probably end up (sadly) in the Mares Chase but there's no denying her form lines from last season........

Gave Allaho a fright who murdered them in Ryanair. Easily beat Mount Ida who won at the fez from an impossible position. Smashed Black Tears who won the Mares Hurdle and just got pipped by Colreevy who beat Monkfish out of sight. Just an incredible list.

Need to remember Willie has Al Boum Photo , very lightly raced, and only beaten 5 lengths in 2021 GC , maybe just a little under cooked , could bounce back to form and maybe an extra gallop somewhere prior to the big day could bring out a better performance

I would say that if there was a market of “which race will he end up in” then the Champion Chase would be a huge favourite and rightly so.

i would just really love to see him over that mid trip because as much as I love Energumene I just think he’s stumped against a superstar in Shishkin. It’s hard to comment on it when he hasn’t been run over the mid range trip, for now, in August it looks likely the CC is the destination but I just hope they up him really.

On Minella Indo, I have this theory about the Gold Cup that it bottoms horses out so I never back previous winners. Served me well until ABP came along. I think if Minella Indo was given an ABP style prep I would fancy him more but I just can’t see that happening

I think the other problem is TOTG I don’t think Cheveley Park would be happy at the current Ryanair champion being pitched in against Shishkin to give Energumene a crack at winning the Ryanair because he would have a better chance winning it. Not an easy sell to Cheveley imo is it?

I agree with AV, well and truly see Energumene and CPS taking on Shishkin unless something happens through the season. As has been discussed, Allaho would be competitive there’s no doubting but on what we’ve seen to date compared with Energumene and CPS, not for me. We can be pretty certain WPM won’t go in single handed against shishkin either, just don’t see Allaho as the option.

Agree with a few and fairly happy to throw free bets at the likes of Envoi Allen and Chantry House. They are stepping into open company and deserve the benefit of doubt imo until proven otherwise.

Discounting horses prior to that would be silly and just on Chantry House, there have been plenty of non flashy gold cup winners over the years. They always knew he stayed even in his novice hurdle year and now he’s stepping up (or did on his last run) I wouldn’t discount him so soon.

Edit - forgot to mention I’ll also likely be adding the likes of Imperial Aura and Eklat De Rire but will wait on stable tours and potentially a comeback run before backing. IA bled in the Ryanair so want to see him over that on comeback, EDR is really unexposed and I was happy having him for the RSA, I reckon who could have served it up to Monkfish.
