A pint to celebrate with your mates in the bar after and then onto the next race. Boy do I miss it !!!!! Cunting Covid. Long live the Vaccine!!!!!
And when you have a big priced winner, feeling the cock of the walk, take that bookies etc only for them to be quite happy to hand you cash cos the fave got beat. A real down to earth bump that one

      • Seriously though, a big part of going is taking a point less off the on course lads for the spectacle imo.

We went to Gold Cup day as part of my stag do and I would not shut up that Martello Tower in the Bartlett was chronically mispriced and I was adamant he was going to win. Convinced 6 other lads to pool ?20 each and stick it on the nose. The bookie was almost laughing as he gave us the cash "fair play lads". One of them had just come back from Cuba with some fat cigars. Puffing away, pint of Guinness, the lads who weren't on desperately asking who I fancied for the Gold Cup. God it makes the blood run hot still 5 years later

Fantastic story Robith - stories like this really make me miss going to the racing - love to hear it!!

I have a good Gold Cup day story too from 2018 - I went with a mate of mine who had never been to the races at all, so this was proper deep end stuff for him. He was happy just to follow me and see where we end up.

I was all over Farclas @ 9/1 which duly obliged. We then doubled our stake on Blow By Blow @ 12/1, then doubled the stake again on Pacha Du Polder @ 25/1. We took Sid Hooper for thousands that day and literally walked away from the course with more money than we could physically fit in our pockets.

The piss up that night was legendary, as was going to the bank the following day and being quizzed as to why we were trying to deposit such large amounts of cash!

          God I miss racing!!!

                Love it charlie.

My MIL lives in Cheltenham so it's always great to combine the trip with a visit. I went up Monday night as I got comp tickets for Tuesday and brought my wife along for Wednesday in 2018. I gave her a tenner a race allowance, and she decided she was going back all the female jockeys. We get to the bumper and she tell me her pick. Seeing it was 28/1 on the boards I remember reading something on Gaultstats that on an outsider before the off you could get a wild price on the exchanges. So I look it up and sure enough, there's 38s about her selection.......Relegate.

Her face on the turn only surpassed by how much mine curdled when having paid for the entire day I now realised I was gonna have to hand over ?400 to my wife

                • Where do we think Discoroma is heading this year, hes entered for a 3 mile 3 furlong on sunday at cheltenham. Could this be a warm up for a stint at the Grand national and therefore skip the festival ?

I'm certainly hoping it's a warm up for the National - he's still available at 50-1 and will get a lovely weight provided he doesn't blow it between now and February.

Also hoping he will run in the Ultima again before going to Aintree. Backed him TWAR at the Festival.

There's three-and-a-half weeks between the Ultima and the GN so I reckon they can let him take his chance in both. Horses who have performed well in handicap chases at the Festival have done well at Aintree in the past. Didn't stop Tiger Roll either.

                          • Some great stories here! Don't have anything to match just yet, but I'll never forget the Mite Bite RSA... We were in the Centaur and got talking to/watched the race with a group who'd backed him all season and had the mix of nervousness/giddiness you'd expect, in line for a tidy 5 figure amount between them if he came in. I've never seen anyone go through such a range of emotions in such a short space of time!

                            • Some great stories - my best day at course would be last years Nov meeting had the pleasure of being in the Ladbrokes box (friend is a huge stake losing punter and took me as his guest on the sun), free drink and the rest .. amazing view etc got to parade ring for the Shloer Chase.. won their tipping competition and beat Andrew Thornton in a tip off won a nice bottle champagne .. but the best part was everyone took to me like I was a tipping king, there was a bumper in Ireland I tipped Dewcup to a fella from Wales, wee old man their with his son .. he had ?40 on at 3/1 and it was his biggest ever bet, he couldn't thank me enough .. weirdly amazing feeling seeing someone so thankful?

Still can't get over Israel Champ beating me in the bumper that day though!

                              • Haha Brilliant Jorvik, no horse quite like the legend Bitey!

Remember him coming round the bend in that gold cup with nico motionless only to find the square root of jack shit of the bridle... what a pony!

probably a sign of things to come...
