Thurles entries are out for the rescheduled meeting on Monday.
Im most interested in the Rated Novice Hurdle over 2M4F at 3.35pm.
Similar decs seem to be confirmed as originally, with
Crosshill 11st 12lb (135)
Capodanno 11st 5lb (No rating)
Broomfields Jeremy 11st 4lb (127)
Slige Dala 11st 3lb (126)
Capilano Bridge 11st 2lb (125)
Castlebrook 11st 2lb (No rating)
Carrolls Cottage 11st 0lb (No rating)
Velvet Elvis 11st 0lb (No rating)
On the face of it this isnt a handicap, with half of them having no irish handicap rating.
The other half appear to be weighted as per their handicap marks though (maybe I'm wrong), which implies that Capodanno has an unofficial mark of 128?
Does anyone with knowledge of Irish Rated Novice Hurdles know how the weights are chosen for those without an official rating?
UPDATE:
Looking into this it seems that the Irish Handicapper may not give a horse a rating until it is (a) entered in a handicap or (b) is rated above 135.
I say may not, because I havent seen a clearer definition of this yet, but one may exist.
Rated Novice Hurdles in Ireland seem to allow horses to run off their Irish handicap marks against horses with no irish rating.
This must mean that the Irish handicapper has determined a rating purely for giving a horse a weight the Rated Novice Hurdle but not confirmed it officially yet.
In the case of Mondays race, this must mean that they currently rate Capodanno at 128, but there is no official rating.
This probably means he would struggle get into a Festival handicap unless he won on Monday.
If that right, what a rubbish system this lot employ, just give them official ratings if they enter a Rated Novice Hurdle or Chase (simples).
No wonder the authorities make such a balls-up of stewarding, race distances, drug testing, cctv etc.
