No question people leaving one tier and travelling to another increases the problem but short of the army patrolling our streets there seems little way of stopping this, some people are selfish and will carry on doing what they want regardless of rules.
I'm in tier 4 and the roads are as busy as they were last week...
If this new strain is more catchable and is so far confined to the SE, then when it spreads so will the tier 4's, which could lead to a national lockdown.

We've already had 2 lockdowns, why would a third in the wake of a new strain that transmits more easily not make sense?

      • Throughout the whole pandemic, there has surely never been a time that makes more sense to have a lockdown than now! Be typical of this Government if they chose not to. They need to stop New years Eve celebrations as much as possible and people socialising over this whole period.

Its the quietest time of the year for most people, the kids are off school. Just announce it now. 27th December for 2 weeks and send the kids back to school a week later. Absolute no brainer for me.

To me it would makes sense to lock down areas that either are affected or look like they're about to be affected by increased transmission and keep those that are unaffected operating as normal as possible.
I'm struggling to see the upside in telling a farmer in Cornwall whose nearest neighbour is 3 miles away that he can't pop round for a catch up.
          Just my take...

          • We (in the north wales county of Denbighshire) have been locked down for 16 cases as Mark Drakeford has locked down the whole of Wales, even though the problem is in the south, its a joke. Many are far from happy up here. I bet if it was the other way around there would soon be a tier system. It is very South Wales biased country, it even happens in football in Wales as well. But thats another story.

              Denbighshire
              158 cases per 100000
              151 cases in w/e 14/12
              2091 total cases to 18/12
              139 deaths to 4/12

As a resident of Flintshire (with a GP in Denbighshire), I share the view that it's a south dominated country but I actually buy in to the 'we're all in it together' philosophy. I simply can't agree that those who think they won't be badly affected by covid if they do catch it should be allowed free rein and it's up to the oldies to keep out of the way. I imagine that the 'many who are far from happy up here' are basically all under 40. 158 cases per 100k (and rising) is definitely not a joke.

I agree with you Ista, but you keep using the word 'sense' of which the gov have none

Not good. If they did the same for the Festival week........then I'd rather they cancel it all together. A festival without the Irish would be garbage.

The owls are not what they seem

Disappointing but not unexpected, here's hoping whatever restrictions are introduced gets the spread under control or the festival is looking a big price for spectators...

Was going to say very similar. Last few days have put a massive dent in the chances of having a crowd of any capacity

Yep, grimly predictable. I thought they'd wait till after Xmas but they obviously aren't wasting any time. Talk of lockdown post Xmas till April, Tier 4 till April etc.

Regardless of how true or untrue that is, this new strain is a hammer blow to spectators at Cheltenham.

I presume racing authorities will have to make a call on Cheltenham spectators in February, so we wont have that long to wait.

I'd imagine they will leave it as late as they possibly can, the members refunds are huge for the course so I'd expect them to give it every chance in the hope of avoiding paying them.
Cut off for hospitality sales will I'm sure be earlier as the logistics involved mean more time is needed to prepare...
