  • The biggest problem through out this 'pandemic' is the government. Personally, I feel the whole thing is over blown and heavily politicised. However, it's been miss managed from the start. If you want to see how labour would have handled this mess you only have to look at wales and Scotland. So we are f#@ked no matter what. I detest Johnson and cannot feel any sympathy for his situation. As citizens we are being treated like naughty little school kids.

What doesn't help is when people begin to police other people and/or point the finger at certain demographics for 'not caring'. We are witnessing the destruction of our civil liberties, and many of us are turkeys voting for Christmas.

As has been said, the media have blood on their hands. They are no better than the propaganda arm of the Nazi's, Goebell's would be in awe at the job they are doing.

      • Firstly, I have little interest in politics (generally), so started with no love or hatred for Boris.

What we also have to remember is that hindsight is a wonderful thing.

We (as in the whole planet) have not experienced anything like this in modern times and can’t call upon experience from previous pandemics.

Could things have been done better? Yes. Could things be a great deal worse? Yes!

“Losing” Xmas is shite, (I have two kids 8 & 11) but potentially losing loved ones is far worse and I know which I prefer.

As for “being treated like naughty little school kids.....” Really?

During Lockdown 1.0 and 2.0, there were loads of people breaking the rules (which are there to slow the spread) and by doing so, have meant that even tougher measures have to be brought in.
The government changed their mind on Xmas, but the goalposts have moved.

Yes, I am a “goody two shoes” and always have been, but it’s been a shite year, it’ll be a shite Xmas..... but it will be an equally bad 2021 if we don’t ALL “take one for the team”.

        • The elephant in the room is this new strain isn't it. Hasn't hit the South West, yet, but it will, it inevitably will.
Even the most optimistic among you must surely acknowledge this is close to a hammer blow for large numbers of spectators in March, is it not?
Hancock said millions would be tested by the end of the year. Its hundreds of thousands, not millions.
There is talk of schools closing till Jan 18th, and testing in schools is a shambles (shocker)
National lockdown 3.0 looks inevitable, for at least a period in January, possibly February.
Winter, and all the additional health issues that go with it, officially starts tomorrow.
The Astrazenica/Oxford vaccine hasn't been approved yet.

At least we know racing will happen, that's the positive!

          • The new variant aspect is a little bit scary.
And the way the four nations reacted to it so quickly shows they are scared also.
Unless it was used in part as an excuse to reverse promises over Christmas (I hope it's this).

But the travel bans, and the other countries that will ban travel today and in the coming days, is telling.

Fingers crossed the early evidence that it spreads quicker/more easily is the only issue, as if it proves more deadly then we need to really hope that the vaccines can deal with any variants, as they arise. If not ????

Hopefully this new variant and future variants are proven to be less deadly, even though they might be more transmissible (that's wishful thinking)

I think you have hit the nail on the head here Q. All viruses mutate, that's just part of the virus lifecycle, so when WHO discovered this in September our scientists would have been well aware a new variant was likely - this shouldn't be taking anyone by surprise.

My guess is Boris wanted to relax the rules in the South for as long as possible and then jumped on this 'new variant' like a tramp on hot chips to reverse his overly relaxed plans re Xmas. The 5 days was a mistake, and this was the perfect opportunity to correct it.

The vast vast majority of people (present company included) are ignorant as to what a 'new variant' means, so it's presented the Gov with the perfect opportunity to use this to their advantage to create fear with the hope of increasing compliance.

                • Everyones turned into an epidemiologist during this pandemic haha, but listening to the top epidemiologist at Oxford Sunetra Gupta, she suggest virus' mutate all the time its what they do. However, each mutation becomes less and less deadly.

As Kev alluded to, this has been used to reverse his 5 days over christmas decision, hes as weak as he is incompetent.

Make no mistake, the narrative is set for the rest of the country to be in tier 4 for Christmas now. A case of this 'mutated strain' will be detected up north and in the west this week. All the 'fleeing' londoners will be branded selfish for spreading the virus etc..... all bullshit but what can you do

Did she really say that? Pretty sure even a basic search on PubMed would reveal peer-reviewed papers that support viruses mutating into more deadly forms.

Perhaps she was talking about just Covid.

                    • I saw some professor/expert being interviewed last night , he did also say when they mutate , they generally become less harmful ??.
I spent an hour on the phone last night to my daughter ,who was in floods of tear's , as she has just been moved into tier 4 .
So she has to spend christmas alone , Not the be all and End all , but for her , knowing that 8 miles away , her sister and us are tucking into our roast turkey
                      is probably devastating - she's only 24 .
Other people have Far worse situations , but as a parent , i really feel for her.

I have watched and read so much of her stuff during the pandemic so cant recall the exact piece it was mentioned in. I have done a google search but it was only ever part of the piece not the headline. I have heard others mention it too however.

I can't see how that would make any sense charlie, why penalise the people in rural areas (and some urban areas) where transmission isn't a concern ?
No question people leaving one tier and travelling to another increases the problem but short of the army patrolling our streets there seems little way of stopping this, some people are selfish and will carry on doing what they want regardless of rules.
I'm in tier 4 and the roads are as busy as they were last week...

Logic says that this cannot always be the case but I think the theory is based around SARS which mutated into nothing.

I think the logic is that most viruses are there for the ride and don't want to kill their host, the ones that kill their hosts more often than not will die alongside their host. Therefore the natural selection kicks in and milder less deadly versions of viruses are around for longer.

The other aspect is that if a version of the virus is passed more quickly it is likely that this is because they have mutated into being able to latch onto the human a lot sooner, like in the nose or throat. And not get into the lungs so much, where it can do more damage.

I think this is why so many of us get sniffles and stuff most years even though we have so much immunity to different versions of the same virus.

Just read up on all this

Used Duckduckgo to do your searches mate and not Google. Their algorithms filter out half of the juicy stuff.

I really do keep meaning to switch to duck duck go instead of google, just for the privacy alone.
