I don't wonder one bit. Boris and Co place political self preservation above all things, and I mean all things, so culling a sector to distract from their calamitous handling of this pandemic makes perfect sense when you it view it through the lense of the people in charge.

The devastating truth is if this government invested as much time and money in actually protecting the vulnerable as they do themselves politically, then we'd find ourselves in a far better position than we are currently in.

oh 100% charlie, its all about them. It is ok them stopping this and that, people are losing jobs yet this lot are still getting paid. There is a common thing throughout all of this, ALL the people telling you what to do are all still getting paid, MPs, cops, hospital staff, supermarket workers etc. I have been lucky with my job (i am not in any of those roles mentioned) as ive not missed a day (and not had to tell people what to do), but i feel sorry for those who have been hit hard by all this whether it has been deaths in the family etc or being hit in the pocket. I keep hearing about this great financial reset on various platforms, many people will be reset to absolutely f*** all I know that for starters.

      • I’ve gone from COVID Tier 2 to Tier 3 to Tier 4 in one day.

We live in the only “blob” on the map, outside of the extended London and South East cluster, and I have just had to tell my wife the news, that Christmas is off, and we can’t go to stay with our daughter and grandchildren next week.

My wife is “Mrs Christmas Celebrations” she lives and breathes it, and basically heads up the whole family planning, enjoyment, for the festive season.
She is stunned, and its going to be a day or two before it fully sinks in for her.

We’ve got a house rammed full of presents ready to take on Christmas Eve, to a place we are now banned from going to.

Whether I can go to the Cheltenham Festival, has now sunk right down my minds pecking order, I just want my wife to be happy again.

        Christmas is her “Happy Place”.

This is certainly not in the spirit of the new measures but why don't you drive down to your daughter's with the presents tonight and leave them on the doorstep - give her a ring when you're outside.

Practically speaking, that would rule out the risk of passing anything to each other.

          • I live in a City with a 7 day rate of 69.3 (Regional avg: 154.1, National avg: 219.6) but still tier 2 due to county rates (even though we're talking towns 40+ miles away). Probably more likely to move to 3 than 1 as they'd be terrified everyone will just pile in on a day trip more than they already do. Feel sorry for those who've just had tier 4 dropped on them, wouldn't be as bad if the government messaging didn't change with the wind so that people could at least mentally prep themselves, but mixed messages in the run up to Christmas is a cunts trick even for this government.

Completely written off the idea of festival attendance now anyway, diverted my hopes to them doing away with this ridiculous 'substantial meal' nonsense in time and hopefully going back to being able to meet up with a few mates. Still feels completely mad/surreal talking about some of this shit...

                It’s been on my mind.

But, my wife would love to seek the grandchildren open theirs, for sure, so maybe Christmas is cancelled for a month, and we can do it then.

                • The nursing staff in the hospital where I work are broken. It’s awful. I’ve been self isolating for 2 weeks as my wife and daughter have had it confirmed with no symptoms which means it is almost impossible to control as they only got tested as recommended by the school. I’ve tested negative twice. It makes no sense. I am by no means a Boris fan but this is an awful thing to try and manage balancing economy and health. I would hate to be in his position.

I can tell you first hand this is true. My dad died of covid in April, he never tested positive (tested negative as did my mum who was with him the whole time). He died of a respiratory illness, most likely pneumonia, but guess what the cause of death on the death certificate was?covid of course. When we questioned the doctor he simply said the symptoms were consistent with covid, and the tests cant be relied on. So how many others has this happened to and what are the actual figures, we'll never know

Sorry to hear this, hope you're all good. Maybe you can do some video calling while they open them? Not the same but better than nothing.

My mums feeling much the same, really looking forward to getting everyone together for months. Luckily we haven't changed tier, but my brothers housemate has tested positive today so he can't come, but only 2 households so I'm not sure who I'm going to see now.

I've just had a similar conversation with my sister who lives in Wales (nationwide lockdown from midnight tonight) and was due to cross the border into England on Monday to bring presents to our 94-year-old dad who's in very poor health. Now she can't make the trip to see him and bring the gifts - it was only gonna be through the window anyway because she wouldn't be allowed inside the house.

She wanted to jump in the car and make a 200-mile round trip tonight but dad has talked her out of it.

There'll be similar heartbreaking conversations going on all over the country.

But this was always going to happen once the lockdown was lifted - I feel so frustrated that Boris gave everyone false hope at a time when all the scientists were saying this isn't going to work.

                        • Mrs DG and I have been self isolating since the weekend before the Festival, we certainly weren't going out and about in Cheltenham mixing with people from God knows where, She has virtually no immune system so dare not go out and of course I can't afford to either as I would end up passing it on to her.It was hard to begin with but eventually we managed to sort deliveries of food, medicines, newspapers, milk etc and we sort of became used to it, luckily we have an enclosed back garden and can at least get some fresh air.In During October we could see Christmas was going to be a non event and told our children and grand children that we wouldn't be able to buy them presents and not to buy any for us so mentally we were prepared for what came to be in recent days.

Out of the blue this morning our youngest daughter and her husband, who live in Cornwall (Tier 1) who we hadn't seen for over a year, appeared on the doorstep laden with goodies as they were on a day trip to collect one of thir sons from university. I virtually had to tie Mrs DG into her chair as she wanted to run and hug them but calmed her down and we were able to have a sit down with them at a safe distance outside for half an hour before they had to leave, pick their son up and drive back to Cornwall. They have just rung to say they arrived home safely but it seems so surreal to think today actually happened.

We are just waiting to be called in for the vaccine now ( shouldn't be long) and in a few weeks we will be able to take a decision on whether we can have a life outside of home again. Fingers crossed but one thing we are certain about, and this is where the wheel goes full circle, we certainly won't be going out and about in Cheltenham come March.

Same happened to my nana mate, had a test on the Thursday, came back negative on friday, died on the Saturday and had Covid as cause of death even though it was actually pneumonia. When my sister rang the hospital to query it, they said they were told to put it on. Wtf is that all about? I have been fuming about it every since so this is all a touchy subject for me. I dont believe a word we are told after seeing that happen first hand
