Think the PM has realistically just put an end to any chance of attendance.
Lockdown until at least the last week of Feb and then areas 'will be moved down tiers'. Very unlikely to have people attending sporting events within 3 weeks of that
I think, could be wrong, but the sporting event attendance/capacity is dependent in which tier you’re in and written into law, so if Cheltenham were to drop to tier 2 then 2000 people can attend, tier 1 4000, my understanding is it’s an automated thing, just as it is with the opening of pubs, hairdressers, gyms etc.
But you’re right, everything needs to be positive in Feb for any change to be made...

With a national lockdown till at least mid Feb, I'd say the chances of anywhere moving into tier 1 or 2 in March are zero. To me we've now reached the point where it's nonsensical for this debate around Cheltenham spectators to continue. It's simply not going to happen, and the small number of people clinging onto hope they'll be there are best off accepting it for their own sanity, and moving onto to accepting they'll be watching it on the telly.
I wrote off being able to attend months ago, nothing at all pointed to anything other than a tiny amount of people on course at most, so today's news isn't really news on that front, more a confirmation.
All i've held hope out for was the thing going ahead at all, which I suspect it probably will. There was no mention of elite sport being halted and it isn't the case in Scotland for which we already have a bit more detail.
From a betting perspective, at least all things remain consistent. There's no real knowing the true affect a large crowd has on individual horses, but it surely must have some positive/negative impact on plenty?! They've been running all season with none or very few and they'll go to the festival with none or very few. A small and somewhat trivial positive but one nontheless, in my opinion.
Got to agree with the comments here... numbers are far to high and with things hopefully moving to tiers mid fed (that’s a big if) ... there is still zero chance of any fans attending. The government would get battered from all sides and would not be worth the risk
On the plus side, think about how fantastic Cheltenham 2022 is going to feel! I've just been on the phone to our Irish mob that normally do just the Tuesday/Wednesday and they're coming for the week next year! Will be odd watching it on the telly, but I am going to try and embrace it. I love watching racing and there are (as hard as it is to see now) some pluses to watching it at home. Not having to wait 20 mins for a drink, lager available that's not cat's piss Carling, and reliable signal for the in play betters. In fact, there are loads of positives and I, as one of the most negative bastards alive on this thread, am going to do my best to embrace them.
Yep instead of 3 pts at 25s have it large at 4s and it deffo runs.
My dad was a steelworker, and worked long hours.
As a young kid, I'd annoy the fuck out of him with inane comments and gibberish. I meant no harm.
He'd put up with it for so long, and then he'd say.

Agree Charlie. I only hope there might be he faintest hope for a bit if household mixing so I can watch it with someone other than on my own.

I'm sure their are plenty of Fat Jockey members who would happily link up via zoom, and be there for you in a time of need.
We must ensure that the Cheltenham Obsessed and Vulnerable are not left to watch alone (unless they want too).
With every one hopefully vaccinated by mid Feb that needs to be, there will then be no justification whatsoever for keeping anything shut. In theory very few will then die if they catch it which is basically the position we are currently in with the common flu. Finally there is light at the end of this long tunnel. Clearly the vaccine program needs to go as planned but by having this Lockdown they will have every chance. With the festival being mid March time is on Cheltenhams side. I think the odds of limited spectators being at the Fez has suddenly got that much better. Everything crossed.
Yet again paying the price for not having a working test trace and isolate scheme.
I'd suspect therell be no problem with Irish horses. The Christmas travel ban was a bit of theatre to show Johnson up for his "new strain" trick to get out of jail for saying Christmas had to be canned. In both Ireland and the UK, horse racing has a pretty strong lobby with the incumbent parties, and both govts will be desperate for a bit of Bread and Circuses
