  • Horses who missed/skipped Cheltenham

I was listening to a podcast earlier and started thinking about the horses that missed Cheltenham for whatever reason.

I'd be interested to hear any opinions on where these horses may end up, or if there is any news on any of them for next season in terms of plans or injuries etc.

One or two are not priced up for many races but had we had a full season I think they may well have had the potential to be higher in the betting and mentioned a lot more.

I've no doubt a lot will have been discussed already on the threads somewhere along the way but it may be worth starting a list and getting any information on them, and maybe getting a few priced up.

Some obvious ones and some not so obvious.

Diol Ker - most of us are aware of this horse now cos of the Formline (probably flattered but still looks good on paper)

Lord Royal - disappointing in prep run losing to Fred (but could it have been decent form ?)
Run Wild Fred - see above

Andy Dufresne - Form with Captain Guiness hard to assess but a lot think he was going to run well in supreme before falling, the race they battled away in looked decent at the time to my eye.

King Roland - The trial's day run was eyecatching for the wrong reason but he looked classy as fuck and clearly needs a staying trip. They think a lot of him and even put him away after being disappointed in that run.

Flouer - Was spoken of as a well handicapped horse, and has form in and around other likely types.

Thomas Darby - reminds me so much of summerville boy and looks a stayer to me, season was a bit cockeyed due to the aborted chasing.

Mister Coffey - They said from the start he would be a staying chaser so not being sharp enough for cheltenham was understandable.

There are probably loads of others too, so add to the list and comment as you wish.

There is a distinct bias with the antepost markets right now, with the cheltenham performers dominating the markets,

but I'm pretty sure had we had Aintree & Punchestown then some of these horses may well be shorter now.
    Or complete no hopers

Lamarckise - clearly was well thought of, the market was consistently short on her all season, and Scooby developed a Nicky Henderson style attraction for her (even though she looked like a fat bitch when she eventually waddled her way around on her debut.

Maries Rock - Just looked fast and has beat very little, but again, on what Nicky coaxed out of Epatante then you never know.

    Some other obvious ones.
Saldier & Klassical Dream & Chacun por Soi.

The price on Saldier is definitely evidence of how the prices can be wrong (although his injury record has something to do with it)

The two I’d most want on side out of your list Q are Mister Coffey (very green and plenty more to come) and King Roland (looks to have plenty of potential especially when chasing)
One I’d like to add to the list is Highway One O Two for small trainer Chris Gordon. Really like the way this horse goes about his business and I think there could still be plenty more to come.

Generally speaking you’re right that next years markets show a clear bias on this years winners/good performers, the one exception to this is the Champion Chase market where Chacun is somehow clear fav.
        Terrible price in my opinion....

And your last paragraph is crucial, without the end of season festivals (and you could add Sandown, Ayr, Cheltenham April meeting) it makes next year so tough from a punting perspective....

                Paul Nicholls has a couple:
                # Pic d'Orhy who won the Betfair hurdle and was briefly in the frame to be supplemented for the Champion Hurdle. Reportedly going chasing this year and already on some peoples radar for the Arkle. Have backed TWAR.
                # Topofthegame missed the season due to injury but subject to showing his well being and full recovery, he's surely an exciting prospect for the Gold Cup. Already being lined up for the Ladbrokes Trophy.

And so does Wille Mullins :
                # Fly Smart was the Mullins / Ricci talking horse for the Supreme but never made his UK / Ireland debut, I recall due to allergies. If recovered could feature this coming season.
                # Rayapour was another Mullins horse, touted for the Triumph Hurdle but preparation delayed through injury and then possibly saved instead for a flat campaign.

Master Debonair for Colin Tizzard. Was very prominent in the betting for the Supreme after some impressive performances but connections pulled the plug after a shocking run behind Sporting John who then went onto bomb at the Festival. Master Debonair was being saved for Aintree where Tizzard tends to do better. I’m not sure what the plan is for MD next season.
