HONEYSUCKLE, a brilliant winner of the Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, returns to Henry de Bromhead’s yard next week.
The mare has enjoyed a fine break, according to Peter Molony, who said: “She has been here (at Rathmore Stud) and she looks great. She had a really good break and we are very happy with her. She’s put on plenty of condition and I am too nervous to do any prep with her – I’ll leave that to the professionals and she will go straight back to Henry’s next week.”
Asked about plans for the season he stated: “We have had a chat about that, and the plan is that she’ll remain over hurdles for this season. She will have a similar route to last season and I’d imagine she will start off in the Hatton’s Grace at Fairyhouse, followed by the Irish Champion. After that, we can have a chat and see what route she’ll go after Christmas.
“We will also have to see how she’ll get on against the new crop of hurdlers this season. There were some particularly good novices last season, such as Envoi Allen. It’s an exciting time for everyone involved with her and she has really thrived during the summer and has put on a lot of condition.”
He added: “She has been here since early April and has enjoyed a really long break and will head back to Henry’s at some stage next week.”
Darver Star set for fences
One of the real success stories from last season was Darver Star and he is set to go novice chasing this season, according to Gavin Cromwell.
“He looks great and he is back with me a few weeks now. The plan is to go chasing with him and all is good with him. He had a good, long break and was out since he ran in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham,” stated Cromwell.
“He ran a cracker in that and he has always looked a chaser and, touch wood, he does jump very well. I have an eye on maybe starting him over fences at Listowel. but we’ll see how he is before then.
“We need a drop of rain before he goes anywhere, but if we get that and if all is good with him, Listowel is a possible starting point for him. He won down there last year and at the minute I would have thought that it will be around then, or sometime in October, when we get him back started.”
He added: “We had a great run with him last season and he was always a big, backward horse that was going to improve, but I don’t think anyone could have envisaged that he’d improve as much as he did.
“We have schooled him over fences and he has taken to them well, so fingers crossed the next few weeks will go well with him. He is obviously a very exciting horse to be going novice chasing with.”

Connections of exceptional mare Honeysuckle have resisted the temptation to send their Cheltenham Festival winner over fences this coming season, opting to keep the unbeaten star over hurdles for what could be another hugely exciting campaign.
The Henry de Bromhead-trained six-year-old, who was last seen extracting the Close Brothers Mares' Hurdle crown from Benie Des Dieux after a stirring duel, is set to return to the Knockeen handler's base this week, having apparently thrived for her summer break.
A former point-to-point winner, the Kenny Alexander-owned wondermare has given the impression she will be a very effective chaser when asked to tackle that discipline, but connections are content to keep her over hurdles for the 2020-21 season, with a host of top-level contests on her radar.
Alexander's racing manager Peter Molony said of the mare, who is a perfect eight out of eight under rules: "She's done very well over the summer and has put on plenty of weight. Hopefully Henry is happy with her when she heads back to him this week.
"We're happy to keep her over hurdles for the season. From Kenny's point of view, we have Elfile to go chasing with this season and we'll keep Honeysuckle over hurdles. Elfile is a top-class mare in her own right and one we're very excited about."
Honeysuckle competed solely against her own sex in her first season over hurdles but dominated against the boys last term, bolting up in the Baroneracing.com Hatton's Grace Hurdle by nine lengths before recording a memorable success in the PCI Irish Champion Hurdle over Darver Star.
Connections faced a dilemma last spring as to whether they would send their 158-rated performer into battle against the geldings again in the Unibet Champion Hurdle, but opted to keep her to her own sex in the mares' festival feature on day one.
Molony says that depending on how Honeysuckle progresses through the season, the brilliant daughter of Sulamani could well take a different path this season after the Dublin Racing Festival, with Betfair Sportsbook and Paddy Power offering a standout 16-1 about her winning the 2021 Champion Hurdle.
"I'd imagine we'll treat the season in two halves for her," explained Molony.
"She could start off in the Hatton's Grace at Fairyhouse before going on to the Irish Champion Hurdle, just like last year. It's going to be interesting to see how she gets on against all those good novice hurdlers from last season and possibly the likes of Envoi Allen.
"From there, we'll see how she gets on and weigh up our options. There's a chance she could go a different route than last year after that depending on how the season unfolds.
"Hopefully all goes well with her. I still think she's getting better with every run so hopefully she might still be improving."
The regular ride of Rachael Blackmore is priced between 3-1 and 4-1 to record a second consecutive success in the Close Brothers Mares' Hurdle at Cheltenham next March."Journeys to Glory, breathing in his head".

Cheers boys. Sounds like they really fancy the Champion Hurdle route. 16's looks far too big but I can't see her having the explosive speed to beat Epatante . We'll see. Interesting that both articles mention Envoi. Could there be a twist in the tail and him stay over hurdles as well. That would be a shocker.Last edited by Lobos; 22 July 2020, 10:50 AM.

As for Honey, by all means go for the top grade 1 2 mile hurdles in the formative months of the season but strictly on a line of form through Darver Star she isn't going to win a champion hurdle. Of course, she is entitled to improve but so is Aba, Eptante even Sharjah, who would have finished closer to Eptante with different tactics in the CH.
What she is though is absolutely top class at 2 mile 4 so fingers crossed common sense prevails and she returns to defend her crown.

And the failed champion hurdle attempt for Samcro didn't stop him winning his Champion Novice chase the following season.

I rushed down to a WH shop this morning to try and get the 20/1 TWAR on her, but in the time it took me to get there, she had been slashed to 12/1.
Instead I have taken the boosted 22/1 for Elfile in the Mares Chase with PP.
PP/BFair are standout price for the race, and I can see this dropping to the 12/1 main market price soon enough."Journeys to Glory, breathing in his head".

I still think 16/1 is a decent price as well.
