  • Proper performance that in todays conditions from Imperial, as ever it's a huge leap from close bros to Ryanair but he's well on his way to a rating of high 150s nudging 160. I read a few of those today were being aimed at the Ladbrokes after todays spin(Sam brown,Black op) so not all will have been A1 but still a nice performance.

    • Oh brewing. You’ve let me down son.

nice performance from imperial aura. Did it nicely. Too high for handicaps now but possibly not classy enough to win (what looks) a competitive Ryanair?
That maybe a bit harsh as he’s probably still progressing.

I think Simply The Betts will have done well to reach the level Saint Calvados is at. (Which he may well do). They've had a similar number of starts (16 to 14), same age (7). Through Oldgrangewood STB has half a stone or thereabouts to find too on Saint Calvados.

Saint Calvados at 20/1 doesn't thrill me to be honest, but I'd sooner take that than 25/1 about the two handicap winners. Not prices I wouldn't take at any stage, just no interest right now.
Turns out, right now I do have an interest. Had 1 pt e/w with WH at 22/1.

I'm still not convinced they'll win grade 1's, however as an each way player I do think Imperial Aura could place and I think the price about him is now fair enough. I liked every horse in that field today...so am always going to like the form.

Thats my thinking too, can’t see either being good enough to win but could be a good place price if they keep performing and winning. Imperial Aura was a deserved winner today in tough conditions. Kim Baileys horses are in great form and fitness too.

Re getting carried away with handicap winners in general......that's what has held me back on Saint Roi and Dame De Compagnie.

Two impressive Festival winners and I like them both - but those races (particularly the Coral) don't often produce winners which turn into double Festival scorers.

I'm not knocking them or Simply The Betts and Imperial Aura for that matter - but historically it's proved difficult to carry that form forward - however impressive they looked in handicap company at the Festival.

Interested in the case why these four may buck the trend.

I feel disappointed too, his jumping has not improved. At least he’s out racing, he may come on from the run and hopefully be out again soon but I didn’t gain any confidence from that run by Brewin.

                • Not seen anything this weekend to trouble Allaho in this. He's my winner.

                  • Brewin’s jumping was not good, in fact it’s a credit to him that he was still in contention and travelling sweetly turning in with the momentum he’d been losing down the back straight.

A drop in trip and a return to hurdles? I’d be keen on him in a 2m handicap hurdle off 148.

Black Ops and (in particular) Sam Brown ran good Hennessy preps.

Olly did say before today he needs his confidence back and would settle for a completed round etc Iv'e never really liked him over 2m and not too sure what i would do with him myself. I read the Preps for Hennesey too and can't believe they are sending Sam Brown there tbh. For me he's at best in small fields with an uncontested lead trying to bully, can't have him in a big field hustle and bustle at all personally.

The only thing I would say about handicaps these days, not all of them but particularly the ones at the festival, they are so condensed and so heavily contested it usually takes a very smart horse or one who’s usually graded class to go and win one, and when they go and win well you should definitely take note and look to loftier targets with them

Not sure he has ever really been fully tested at 2 miles though. His campaigning would suggest that Olly thinks he’s better at 2.5 but I see him as a strong traveller who hasn’t seemed to finish his races that well at the intermediate. Time may tell that he just doesn’t finish races that well at all(!) but I’d really like to see him coming off a strong pace at 2 miles. And based on today’s showing I think I’d prefer that to be over hurdles.

That’s harsh on Sam Brown who has only run in small fields over fences so i wouldn’t say there was enough evidence to suggest that it’s preferred. He seemed to do perfectly well today putting it up to good opposition and battling on well to the line. I’ve backed him this evening EW at 33/1 for the Ladbroke/Hennessy - he was excellent before flopping when favourite for the Reynoldstown and remains a potentially high class second season chaser.

He hasn't put it all together over 2m yet but I still can't warm to him over it as he needs so much to come right with him seemingly need to come from deep over that trip as not quite the pace of others imo. Olly has plenty of faith in him thou so no doubt will campaign him in graded races still.

Iv'e touched on Sam brown in the Hennessy thread, 33/1 is certainly an overreaction and he has run well today(i like him as a horse) just my feeling with him,the trainer was quoted as saying he he thought he lacked experience to be chucking in him their and might even go the Betfair chase as it is often a small field (despite him admitting he might well get outclassed) He's on the up thou so i hope he has a good season regardless of where he goes.

I’m intrigued to see where he goes next as I’m really not sure how much of a confidence booster that would’ve been today. I would suggest it’s either hurdles or if he’s adamant about staying over fences then a crap little conditions race. I do rate Olly Murphy.
