APT would have been the first horse aged 6 to win the Ryanair in a decade, so to fall just short at that age, IMO, bodes well for another crack at 7yo.

I think Allaho going so close in an RSA does warrant a crack at the Gold Cup this season, or at least starting in the Graded 3M chases to see if he stays against the older horses in the open Grade 2's and 1's, before deciding whether to stick with the Gold Cup.
HDB and RB both felt APT didn't run his race in the Ryanair. Nothing came to light but they thought he ran very flat. Perhaps he does deserve another chance.

Imperial Aura is more lightly raced, but is still the same age and too close to Simply The Betts to get me excited about winning a Grade 1 at the moment. I'd have him over Simply The Betts just about....

Ultimately there may not end up being a lot between them all when the shouting is over and they're retired but the two at bigger prices need to step up to my lovely SC's level before I would back them
I don't think you can knock Saint Calvados's effort in this year's race.
Beaten a neck, Only a seven y/o, Surely get to race again here next year.

I am and will be sticking with the form on offer, of Saint Calvados finishing ahead of A Plus Tard again.

I am reluctant to back Min, on account of his age, however there was an age stat somewhere that wasn't too damning, so I may have to start getting them free bets on him for the race.

I have no interest in the handicappers that may or may not turn up for this race, and will hold my hands up if they do the business, though for me, this is unlikely.

          I didn't knock him did I?

The price doesn't excite me at this stage.

For all that I have always liked Saint Calvados (100/1 club) ... he's only won a Grade 2 and Grade 3. I don't think he'll ever win a grade 1 at the Festival, he'll come up against a classier horse.

Hope Samcro has a clear run of it this year. The way he battled back was great, and that win would of done lot for his confidence. He is so quick away from his fences and the marsh was a good race. Ryanair is a very competitive, but he’s the my idea of the winner.

This isn't a dig at you hardheld but I've always found it so odd when people mention a horse winning boosting it's confidence. Does Samcro really know he won the Marsh as before and after the line Melon was in front. I can understand a clear round of jumping helping a horses confidence that's previously fell, but I can't get my head round a horse knowing it's won a race.

For what's it's worth I'd have Samcro in my shortlist of winners right now as well.

The thing is if Chacun Pour Soi is fit then Min definitely runs here for me, if CPS doesn’t make it to the festival then there’s every chance Min could drop back into the Champion Chase again for one last hurrah given it will probably be his last festival appearance

                  noun

                  1. The attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something non-human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.

Trainers love a bit of it. Pet owners do it too, like when they tell you their dog is 'happy' or 'bashful' or whichever one of the other dwarves they feel like mentioning.

In the literal sense, animals can't have human emotions... but I suppose making that point is focussing on the technicality of the wording rather than the actual substance...

Trainers (like Nicky Henderson in particular) will discuss a horses personality, a 'will-to-win' and so on. I once read, the way a horse is treated after getting its head in front at the line, may have an impact on it's memory. On the other end of the scale, people are more accepting of horses remembering bad things, like bleeding, hence them not 'putting it all in' next time for fear of going through the pain barrier.

Personally, I would agree horses can't have human emotions, but the way I interpret that is they don't mean it literally.

If they do mean it literally, I suppose it's harmless - people believe in Zeus and God and Allah and Ghosts. Compared to that, people like Nicky Hendo and Bryony Frost talking to horses like they're real people is not a big worry.

Talking about Saint Calvados, you guys may think I'm mad, but I think they'll aim him in at the Gold Cup, and that he's a live each way chance.

                      • He's crying out for step up in trip, and they've also got Simply The Betts for the Ryanair.

Irrespective of the Gold Cup, he's a must for a King George book at 33/1.

You are deffo on the wacky Baccy. Think he's only ever gone right handed once in his life and that was a disaster.

The thing you read about a horse being treated differently when it is First past the post had me thinking for a few seconds. That there may be some logic to the confidence mantra.

Then I quickly realised the horse has to comprehend the race aspect, as well as the finishing line and the meaning and importance of finishing first.

So it is another often trotted out comment that is simply bollocks .

Unless someone can come up with another explanation.
I totally get the not falling and hurting itself bit.
Although I’m pretty sure most are oblivious to that also.
