Sadly the race came too soon for the great Don..............hes only just finished his last race at Haydock, bless him.

    • Shame bookies didnt overact a bit more to Santini's run, he should come on for that you would think though.

Those last 5f were a terrible watch for a staying chase, I'm sure it doesn't take a genius to work out where my money was in the race yesterday as soon as they took them fences out knew it wouldn't end well

      • Not having the fences to slow them down seemed to make it into a serious slog

        Any doubtful stayer folded

I was hoping they got silly.

Never going to happen given that he was beaten a head I suppose....

Although you'd think he was thrashed by some of the comments on here
Was a weird watch imo. He was having to be shaken up from about halfway, but he kept looking like he was going to rally on and win. And then gave up.

          • Santini would have probably won the 2020 running of the Gold Cup over another 100 yards, and possibly if Nico didn't have to switch after the last. That's up for debate I know, but the very fact that it is shows he is worthy of consideration in the GC and yesterday should do little to dissuade his backers (not one). He clearly needed the run IMO (visually before, during and after), and there's no reason to think at 9 he's less likely to win than last year. Writing him off based on yesterday as a horse that can't win the Gold Cup is just silly IMO - he beat 10 of his 11 competitors in March and its far from madness to suggest he could go one better next year.

            • That should ensure Melon targets the Gold Cup.

                • Allaho pushed out to 40/1 for this with Bet365 now.

Been beaten first time out last two seasons. I know it was almost impossible to see today but looked like he made a mistake about 3 out and was likely just cruised home after that. Good chance he goes up in trip after today too.

When you look at the prices of Champ and Minella Indo, 40/1 bit of an overreaction I’d say.

                    A good spot.

I don't think he'll stay the trip well enough myself however, it certainly isn't unfeasible that he'd run here and you're right, on the RSA it's a big price discrepancy. You would like to hear he's okay after today though, as he was walloped?

Yeah probably the sensible thing to do. Mullins said he made 2 bad mistakes which knocked the stuffing out of him so I reckon it was a case of once beaten the jockey didn’t push him hard after that. No mention of anything else so fingers crossed he’s OK. I’d be more than happy to write today off though going forwards.

Thought the same but Patrick afterwards said along the lines of 'looking forward to keeping him to 2.5 or 3 and seeing what he can do' so not as optimistic now

                        • Looks like a decent gallop is guaranteed as native river is being targeted at the race again

That's very good news for Al Boum Photo backers as he was more impressive in 2019 when the pace was hot.

He took a while to even get to the front the last time he ran in it.
I doubt he could lead a field in a Gold cup again, unless they gift it and go a crawl.

                                Thats the point

They went a crawl last year

Native river will ensure that doesn't happen

I'm not saying he's going to win just that he will either set a gallop himself or pressure the other prominent runners into making the race a greater stamina test

It should suit all the protagonists really bar maybe champ who's jumping could fall apart if he hasn't improved
