  • I would agree with that also, both. RSA is always the logical route, but as we’ve seen over the years plenty have went alternative routes and proven its affective as well.

It is a fairly unique test of both stamina and class, especially with the hill at the end of a gruelling race just shy of 3miles to that point.

    • I really thought the 4 miler would be a popular trial after they upgraded that race to a G2 but it looks like Native River’s year was a one off...

      • I see the 4miler as a route for the National more than the GC

        • It's only 4 furlongs further than the Gold Cup now, so it'll become more relevant as a trial for the gold Cup than it once was. Particularly when we see so many staying chasers housed in so few top yards, and with a handful of powerful owners. But generally I'd agree, we will see more horses come from the race aimed at the Nationals.

          • I know Samcro is shorter for the Ryanair but Jack Kennedy is in today’s racing post saying he’s the horse he’s really looking forward to the most coming back and he thinks he’ll get 3m no problem. Looks like they will try and aim for gold cup. I suppose that was the original plan a few years ago anyway before the champion hurdle year.

Interesting Ballybeen. Have you got a link or a direct quote and I’ll add it to the Horse Targets/Quotes thread.

              • ‘He’ll stay three miles no bother, the fact you can put him anywhere in a race will be a big help, and he’s just so laid back, I hope he’s in for another big season’

                Had to type it out

Will he stay 3 miles 2 though with a stiff finish?

That gets you to the 1/2f pole...

                      • Surely that’s the question for most horses going onto their first gold cup. Campaigned at around 3m before the big one.

                        • They rarely race at 3M2&1/2F or more until the big day.

Though Native River did 4M before coming 3rd then 1st in the Gold Cup.

                          • You’d imagine Samcro campaign last season will mirror Envoi Allens this year - 2 and 1/2 miles then after Cheltenham stepping up to 3m at Punchestown .. giving you a good eye to whether it will suit the horse to then run in the 3m open class races the following season in a prep for the Gold Cup.

I don’t agree that a horse HAS to run/target the RSA in their novice season or they won’t be a Gold Cup horse.

                            • It will sure be an interesting GC, I am with the stats on this and believe only one of the unexposed horses in the race can challenge ABP i.e. Champ, TOTG etc. That is how I am playing this market and got those 2 covered ay decent prices. May look at Samcro nearer the time.

                              • I’ve been looking at the Gold Cup market closely recently as I want it to be the race where I have a really strong position in come the Friday, back in March I was all over Topofthegame at 33/1 but I can’t have him now at 12/1, that’s a massive shortening of a horses price without leaving his box, and more recently I kept loving the look of 14/1 for Lostintranslatio, thought it was a decent price for a horse that finished 3rd of the back of a terrible prep and for a stable that was not in good form, but surprisingly I’ve only just watched the replay of the 2020 Gold cup for the first time and whilst I still like him, he had the absolute dream run through for the first 2 circuits whereas Al Boum Photo was pitched wide the whole time and still came out on top, if he had Lostintranslation’s trip he would have won further, although Lostintranslation is a foot perfect jumper I will have to back Al Boum Photo repeatedly at 5/1 until he has his one prep run in the new year and goes 3/1, whilst I will be backing Lostintranslation e/w at 14/1, looks to be going Betfair Chase then king George again first and then remains to be seen if he has another run after that before the Gold Cup. Nothing new or exciting here just my long term antepost ramblings....
