I won't care though... if he gets beat he has no right to be talked about in a Champion Hurdle winning context.

Whilst his juvenile rating is clearly inflated, his flat rating is deflated, and it has to meet somewhere in the middle...

He'll have to win the Ces for me to think he's got enough ability to win the Champion Hurdle.... and win it well in fact, a nose victory won't be enough and I'd still lay him after it.

He has been entered today for Champions Day at Ascot in the Group 2 Long Distance Cup.

        Quoting myself here!!!

Are geldings even allowed to run in the top flat 2 mile cup races ???

For 200k less, but a much smaller field...

Might be a good bit of placing?

I almost hope he does win that, then I'll lay him at something mental like 5/2 in October... ready for him to start his hurdles campaign up again.

I'd be staggered if I can't go green on him with this plan....

Far better educated people than me in here but as far as I know it’s only the classics that do not allow gelding...

            • Yeah just the classics. Not so long ago Cirrus Des Aigles won the Coronation cup as well as few other G1 ones as a gelding, always thought he would have a great chance in the Arc but was unable to run in that also

Cheers. In that case, If he went for and won the long distance cup they may possibly stick to the flat and take in all the cup races next season. More money and less risk.

Reminds me of a couple years ago when Crossed Counter won at Goodwood and immediately got introduced for the St Leger by 3 or 4 bookies in the aftermath of the race despite him being a gelding and ineligible to run.

Wonder if punters were refunded in that scenario knowing that it was impossible for the horse to run?

Legally they would have had to.

                    • This was bugging me last night but I finally managed to recollect which horse attempted to win the Triumph Hurdle, Cesarewitch and Champion Hurdle.

For those of you old enough, Detroit City won the 2006 Triumph Hurdle at 7/2F and then went on to win the 2006 Cesarewitch (OR 94) at 9/2F. He started the next season over hurdles winning the Greatwood off 148 and won twice more before running a lacklustre race in the 2007 Champion Hurdle when sent off 6/4F (beaten 19l into sixth). He tragically fell on his next seasonal reappearance so we've no idea if he would have bounced back to his previous form.

I think this is definitely the last horse to attempt it and I'm not sure that many have tried it previously either. It therefore does not carry too much weight in terms of stats but maybe the fairly brutal nature of the Cesarewitch eventually caught up with him and took its toll.

                        Countrywide Flame attempted it.

Won the Triumph, 2nd in the Cesarewitch then 3rd in the Champion Hurdle.

Interesting. I never realised they actually have to refund in a scenario where a horse isn’t allowed to run. Cheers

                            • A heads up before it’s in the public domain, Aramon has done a tendon and is out for the season. Hopefully any backers can get out quick.
