Goshen will want to be winning the Coral Hurdle at Ascot on Saturday to stand any chance of being involved in the Champion hurdle. The Coral Hurdle is over 2m 3f, but don't let that put you off. It didn't stop Annie Power winning it and then following up in the Champion Hurdle a couple of years later, or Faugheen who won it the same season he won the Champion Hurdle. Yanworth also won the race before going off 2/1 favourite for the Champion Hurdle that season, albeit disappointing in the race itself.
Main Fact running over staying trip this weekend potentially.
Missed the greatwood if he takes up this option at Haydock. Will be beaten by Alcazar anyway
Be surprised if he goes over 2M in this sphere given he was needing every inch of 2M on flat recently. The step up needed if he's to keep improving(not sure how much more he can improve, incredible sequence for him)
Gary Moore expects to discover whether he has a true Champion Hurdle contender when Goshen makes his first start of the season in the Coral Hurdle at... Read More
For me to start taking him seriously, he's going to need to win this especially with the weight allowance he'll be getting this weekend. He doesnt need to win by 2-3 lengths but he certainly needs win or be right up there till the line
Good to see him come out, and should help answer some (not all) of the questions being raise on him
Rain on Friday, 3.5mm predicted, on a course appears to take well on. A lots failing in place here for him especially if he can get a easy lead
Laurina would make this a right interesting watch, and maybe an interesting bet. I dont think she's got the stomach to battle it out nowadays, but she'll be running off 10-7 which I can't ignore. I mean, this is probably her best chance of winning all year - first time out Nichols horse, weight favours her. Hmmmmmm

I agree, has to win and win well to be in for consideration in this IMO - very few excuses if he doesn't.
I still can't believe his price. I wouldn't back him at 7/1, unless someone had a gun to my head.
I suppose Goshen fans would argue that Aspire Tower franked Goshen's Triumph form. He would have obliterated Aspire Tower had he finished the race, and Aspire Tower accounted for Champion Hurdle third fav in Abacadabras, who has since won the Morgiana. I know this has to be interpreted carefully as the Morgiana was shit and Aba may not have been fit first time up, but Goshen fans must surely be encouraged that the form is starting to take a semi decent shape, no?
I was forced to eat humble pie post Triumph, even in the wake of what happened (which kind of proved my 'he has mistakes in him' theory), but I'm perfectly happy eating humble pie again - I don't think he'll win this and I don't even think he'll win on Saturday.

The interesting thing about the ascot hurdle (assuming they are all declared) is it's a better race than the morgiana. IMO
I'd be impressed if Goshen can beat this field.
Laurina could do anything from smash them on the bridle to have a period from both ends mid-race. (that comment makes me a horse sexist) (but not in the same way as Nicky Henderson).
Song for someone is only 5 and a potential improver already rated 153.
As a winner of the silver trophy at chepstow in impressive fashion Tea Clipper cannot be discounted either, again only a 5 yr old.
Call me Lord has some decent form and has been rated as high as 160.
Not sure Indefatigable is best suited to this race though, but she gets weight and is already rated 151.
After watching the race on Sunday then epatante on the gallops & champion back she is just going to do the same thing again this year stalk and pounce late don’t look to much into she’s going to win lads

I think this weekend's Ascot hurdle could be more informative as you have second/third season hurdlers in there, so could be useful in terms of confirming ratings - if thats your think.
Why would that be. Ok lets imagine Goshen wins and beats Call Me Lord by 7 lengths.
Firstly, Goshens running around with 6lbs less weight to lump around, and Call Me Lord was no where to be seen in the CH
This is a 145-152 field at best for me consisting of Goshen, 3 handicappers, a hit and miss Mare who hasnt hit form for a very long time, and a Grade 2 hurdler in Call Me Lord
I personally think its an average, but interesting, race

Totally agree opatcho. Very average race without a serious CH contender.
I'm fully expecting and backed Goshen to win at the weekend.
Laurina is my only concern. She has already ran and finished 4th in a Champion Hurdle. She's a fair mare on her day, but she has her issues, that have been well documented already.

I get your point
For a grade 2 it's not bad. And more if a mixed bag than filled with quality, but you'd expect that from a grade 2.
I was simply comparing it to the grade 1 morgiana, which was a non entity.
I'd be impressed with Goshen winning against that field, because I don't think he's that good. So I expect him to lose and will be backing against him accordingly.
The early prices look promising, although I'm not sure who will come out on top.
I don't lay horses much, but this may be the best time to do so looking at his price.
However, If Goshen was to win this race in a good manner, then for me he'd have enhanced his champion hurdle credentials more than any of those in the Morgiana. As they've stood still for me.
The more I look at this race, the more I'm thinking that Goshen can not bloody lose!
His running style will be key here, they'll kick off after a mile and maintain a Cyrname like gallop
You have horses in this that...
- wont like the ground
- wont like being carried round by Goshen, and pushed along at a course like Ascot which is a b*tch in soft/testing ground and you have a idiot that loves conditions and kicks off and makes it a punishing race
- so called Graded horses, that are pretty much Grade 2 horses that are too high up in the handicap
- handicappers who arent well 'handicapped' here
I'm wont of the Goshen "aint going to do jack" folks on this forum.
However, and although I laughed at his price at first, I fully expect him to win this race, and I will back him (first for everything)
He's going to leave these lot struggling, probably leading them by 10 lengths as he gets to the last hurdle, and he's going to coast home - some will get all excited and try and get more on for the Champ Hurdle. I wont be. I know he has little left in that tank towards the end of his races, and when he's get to Cheltenham, he'll be well and truly found out
I'm having mad thoughts for a Wednesday... apologies :-)
